The Fountain
whyfi
Maybe this has already been covered, but does anyone know why they haven’t turned on the fountain at Grand Army Plaza? They removed the winter protection, but no one’s flipped the switch (or turned the knob) just yet…

anonymousThat's a good question. That should be a Parks Dept question. You can locate PH's district office on NYC.gov.
But are you aware of the Marionettes Library that exists in the Archs' atrium? They typically have a show for the children on Saturdays (Between 1-4pm) and the marionettes can be taken out by anyone (Similar to a library book). If that's not PH's best kept secret, I don't know what is.

WTF!?!?! Are you serious? Where can I find out more info about that? That's pretty cool.

anonymousI just bumped into this over the weekend.
While I was with the kids at the farmers market, I saw the librarian posting a sign on the NW base of the arch (That's also the entry) around 12-12:30pm.
After some pause, I wheeled the kids to the Arch and just asked if there was a tour of the Arch.
The librarian allowed us inside and we walked to the top. On the way up we encountered back-pack marionettes and one that was about 25 feet tall.
Pretty sick stuff -
whyfiIs that right?! The wif and I have been wanting to get to the top of the arch for some time (I hear that the view is unbeatable!), but I hadn't heard about the marionette library... -
dailyheightsUm hellooo, like, I blog all this stuff for you guys? Hello?

Seriously, I should just give up the blog and make this message board the main page. If there was a way to generate an RSS feed from a message board, I would do it in a heartbeat. -
whyfiI'm new- I reserve the right to claim ignorance on all things DH for the next 3 months, 2 weeks, 6 days... or so. -

That is the funniest thing I've seen here in a long time...

anonymousThere is a problem with some mechanism in the fountain which was reported in one of the local papers. It probably won't be fixed for 6 months or so. -
anonymous6 months, is that all.
Just in time for ice sculpting -
anonymousFor the record, does the DH comply with the Spring Forward idea.
It looks like I've been posting an hour ago, yet I just did. Dejavu -
dailyheightsI can reset the system time but I haven't quite figured out how to get it to reflect current Eastern Time. EmilyM may know better than I do. I think I set it as GMT +5 - maybe that should be +8 or something like that? What the hell time zone are we in? -
emilyHow about GMT -5 or -6? -
anonymousbut GMT is now in BST!! -
davebEST for NYC would -5. -
t-falmarionettes in the arch? oh god, that's pretty creepy. but not as creepy as the fact there is a marionette librarian there too! what sort of fucked up freaky MIS degree do you have to get to be a marionette librarian!?!?! -
dailyheightsI tried changing the board's official time and that had no effect. It must be something at the server level ((gets out wrench to pry the hood off Cpanel)) -
dailyheightsDeeDee, can you find that article online? We should post it. -
captain mI saw the fountain in operation in the spring, it was really nice. I find it irritating that the city can do all the work and not get the pump right...and it wont get fixed until winter...wtf. and they want to build an arena megaplex? -
anonymousThe City will not be building the megaplex (Aka Ratnerville), but Ratner himself, along with some $ tax payers money (Chump change when you compare to the $3.5B construction costs.
In response to your post, the city tasks are always losing money because they attempt to save money when they award a contract to the lowest bidder; Private developments rarely lose money because profit is the main concern for the developers. The fountain is a direct result of lowest bidder awarded project -
whyfiThe fountain is great when it's going- not only does it looks snazzy, but it's always nice to walk by and catch a little cool mist on a sticky day...
now, I'm no mechanic, but I think that, with a pump, the tools and some duct tape, I could put slap it in place in under 6 months... where do I get 'em?!
-
staceyI love that fountain - it makes a great backdrop for pictures - I took my wedding pictures in front of it. -

Both projects are under supervision of the city and use my tax dollars.

queen_of_piesDH star reporter QOP gets to the bottom of the our broke roccoco fountain! Here's what Prospect Park Commissioner Tupper Thomas wrote to me when I inquired about why it was dry:
"We hope to have the fountain running by Labor Day, but it could be as late as Sept. 15th. The engineering sub-consultant has taken responsibility for the problem and the new pump has been ordered. Installation will begin as soon as the new mechanical device arrives." -
innocent xI almost thought you guys were cool enough to be talking about the new Aronofsky film. -
sleighb76Not that cool. -
