Planet Fitness replaces Phat Albert

mugofmead111Are we sure it's replacing Phat Alberts or utilizing space in the same building?
Anyway, that's interesting. -
whynot_31I saw another article that said it was going to take over the Phat Albert space, but can't find it.Charter schools are not small, so it is going to need a lot of space... -
yesbrooklynInterested to see more information regarding their philosophy and their leadership. Stripped down website... -
doughmane@ whynot_31 - Charter schools often function with little space, when they're co-located. My girlfriend is a librarian at a middle school charter in Harlem, and all three grades are housed on the third floor of a DOE school. -
Marco555Did a little digging and seems the same extended family - Srour family - owns the Bond Bakery building, Ph/Fat Albert stores, Brooklyn lollipop import company (the company that owns the bed stuy building where the coworking space just signed for a second location) and a few others (such as 81 willoughby). This assumes brooklynites with the last name "srour" are all connected. -
whynot_31The Phat Albert space was the last to go, and is now reportedly for rent. -
Marco555
The Phat Albert moved to the space next door that wasn't used for retail previously. Their old space is now for rent.whynot_31 said:The Phat Albert space was the last to go, and is now reportedly for rent. -
whynot_31So, Phat Albert has become smaller? -
Marco555So, Phat Albert has become smaller?
I'm not sure since I've never walked in. I don't know if their current space was part of the original store or used for random storage. I wouldn't be surprised if the later. -
whynot_31going, going
-
suppleknucklesgood riddance. in this case, the owner of the building owns the business, so it's not a matter of some tenant being pushed out. and it's not like this area is hurting for more discount stores. -
mugofmead111
Not all discount stores get closeouts from Macy's though.suppleknuckles said:good riddance. in this case, the owner of the building owns the business, so it's not a matter of some tenant being pushed out. and it's not like this area is hurting for more discount stores. -
whynot_31I would love it if a Jack's opened in the area. They sell enough stuff to survive in Manhattan. https://www.google.com/search?site=&source=hp&ei=cGw9WeXqK8fNmwHcl4uoDw&q=jack's+store+nyc&oq=jack's+store&gs_l=mobile-gws-hp.1.1.0l5.3326.14654.0.17596.13.13.0.5.5.0.2506.9294.2-4j4j6-2j1j1j1.13.0....0...1.1.64.mobile-gws-hp..2.11.3037.3..5j41j46j0i131k1j0i46k1._dWbNy_Y3eo -
mugofmead111edited June 2017@whynot_31 Jack's is another discount store though. LOLI personally wouldn't mind seeing it come in though.
-
whynot_31As noted above, a charter school is already on the way for the Phat Albert space. -
rararuuuPhat Alberts just moved everything into the northern part of the store (previously the apparel was separated by a small set of stairs from the rest of the store). I noticed a few months back that they stopped restocking (they were great for cheap vinyl shower curtains!) and then they completely cleared out the apparel section and consolidated the linens to move the apparel in there. Last I was in there about 2 weeks ago and it was almost bare bones. Most of the items were gone and everything was super marked down. They called it a liquidation sale and a few locals I've spoken with were under the impression that it wasn't the end of old Albert's but I fear it may be. I may try to get in there today and see if there are any cheap glassware, but once they officially shutter, I'll have to trek further down Flatbush for good liquidator stores
I just saw an article stating that Starbucks was moving in to the Fat Alberts location in Bushwick (or was it BedStuy?), so it seems their fates are sealed -
mugofmead111@rararuuu - Woodhull is in Bed-Stuy. On the PLG FB page, someone claimed that the owner of Phat Albert's is retiring. -
Marco555I've seen an announcement stating that "BKLYN Marketplace," or something of the sort, will be taking phat alberts place. It appears to bd cobranded with the Srour's coworking space in the building -- BKLYN Commons - and targeting a slightly more affluent or trendy crowd than phat Albert's core demographic. -
whynot_31edited July 2017Yes, it seems like it will be targeting the folks who use the coworking place. Offering them lunch and small portion groceries. -

Marco555It's now open. -
mugofmead111I peeked in on Saturday. (I would have gone in, but I don't like checking my bags.) It looks like a remixed version of Phat Albert - just more streamlined. -
whynot_31For some reason, I though we would get a boutique grocer. -
Marco555
I'm pretty sure one of the earlier "coming soon" posters suggested that. Maybe they realized it wasn't worth competing with Wholesome? Who knows.whynot_31 said:For some reason, I though we would get a boutique grocer. -

Sounds like the case of the wishful thinking rumor about the TJ's on Washington Avenue.Marco555 said:

Marco555The current sign says "fresh food" and "seasonal specials" are "coming soon." -
mugofmead111
I'm sure someone on the PLG FB group will post when that arrives.Marco555 said:The current sign says "fresh food" and "seasonal specials" are "coming soon."

rararuuuShopped there a week or so ago, they are still using the Phat Albert bags! Maybe all is not lost -
mugofmead111This incarnation feels like a streamlined Phat Albert, with a different name. The space feels less cluttered. -
whynot_31This version seems like a placeholder until a better paying tenant can be found.
