    dear new,

There was some wild speculation (wishful thinking?) that it would turn out to be an ironic hipster bar, but the function of this business is pretty clear if you take a walk down Vanderbilt Ave.

Once you read the Time Out article about HHO (as those in the know call it) everything will become clear.

I was riding my bike around Bedford and, lo and behold, I saw a Home Heating Oil store, shuttered, missing most of the consonants in its name. A twin, perhaps?

Home heating deity François B (fittingly nominated for Most Eligible Entrepreneur in this year's Home Heating Stylez magazine World Heating Awards) is behind this affair, which is focused on heating the home in all of its glorious, warmth-drenched forms (vintage wood-burning stove, electric heat and what he's calling "outer-planetary", but mostly oil). A glimpse into the subversive world of home heating, at a time when the rich tapestry that is ProHo needs it most.

jeezus. Time Out actually wrote an article about that storefront? There's nothing more interesting going on in PH than that ugly sh8t?

Ok, so I'm not an expert on home heating or privatizing of utilities, but here's my take on Home Heating Oil:

They may be trying to capitalize on political and economic factors in the neighborhood - seems to be a lot of renovation going on here, when people are more likely to choose an alternate source of heating; also consider the type of people that are buying in the neighborhood, people who may be more likely to choose greener sources of energy; in addition, the infrastructure in our 'hood doesn't seem to be all that great (a la the coned blowout of last summer), and if you want to keep out a big new development project like the Ratner thing, you may be able to stall it with a general lack of good public infrastructure (not needed if people are using alternate sources).

But I could be completely wrong.

Not for nothing, but why would HHO open right before spring???

    UGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, it makes sense that they would open now. According to a lurker who refuses to post, those home heating oil shops write most of their contracts in the spring and summer. The earlier you order, the better the rate you get.

I was under the impression Home Heating Oil was a chain, since I used to drive home from work through Bushwick and a similar storefront appeared there just a few months ago (same exact sign and everything).

Are you trying to ruin the good times for all of us? What happens at HHO, STAYS at HHO. Let people thinK they're just trying to sell oil heaters, PLEASE. Don't spoil it! Next thing it'll be in The Times, and we'll be over-run with Manhattanites trying to horn in on the PH fun. SHHHHH.

You would eat the eyes too if you were otherwise stuck with cat food. Look at this expose...

I am loving the new HHO ad mockup. Please tell me you've made a direct pitch to them.

Ha... no. I'm testing a new ad system that would possibly be less annoying than blogads. The idea is that individual local businesses would buy an ad and be a featured advertiser.

Curious -- has anyone switched, or know of anyone who has switched, to heating oil from alternative heating sources ... because of this storefront???!?
