Jewish Hospital rant, etc.

1. I really wish there were some cool local places to hang out around here. Soda Bar and Tavern on Dean are the closest places, aside from the corner my local bodega is located on. And Im not counting the "Sports Inn" on Franklin avenue, or Utopia.

2. It saddens me to see so many young people move into 699 Classon, and 551/555 Prospect with no place to go. I want people who move here to feel safe and love Brooklyn as much as I do. Countless times I get home from work and see a young person briskly walking alone deeper into PH avoiding any eye contact or other friendly greeting; you can tell when people are a little scared.

3. Give us hot water AND a rent reduction.

4. FYI - theres a little hardware store a block or two down classon avenue for those essentials not found in the bodegas.

I know this has been mentioned before, but where is the Jewish hopital?

Hang in there, DanH. As Emily (I think it was her) said, that area has changed a lot in a short time and will continue to do so. It's only a matter of time before a coffee house and a bar open. I'm sure there are plenty of others who feel as you do - soon enough someone will see the opportunity to fill the niche.

When I think to Classon Avenue 15 years ago, it was a much rougher place. I think at this point the changes are more residential and that the commercial will follow soon thereafter.

It covers nearly an entire square block... Classon is 1-2 blocks West of Washington. The two bigger sections are on Prospect place btwn classon and franklin.. my section is on classon btwn prospect and st marks.

you should open something... like a DH clubhouse. free internet but only site available is DH. and you have to be wearing the DH cap to be inside, or on the benches ouside.

if the coffee is good, people will come. look at gorilla, just opened 2 short years ago! ..no way that place is losing money..

Apparently someone's apartment was broken into last night on the Classon Avenue side. The victim told me that it seems like they just took a crowbar to the door and cracked right through.
Lock your doors!

yeah, the border of PH & CH is Bedford Ave... I live on Prospect Pl btwn Franklin & Bedford... been here for 7yrs this April...

Been here for 30 plus years and the border was never Bedford, more like Classon.

Yeah, with all due respect, neighborhood boundaries seem to differ between people in real estate and those not in real estate. For those in real estate, the boundaries of the neighborhood expand when said neighborhood is hot...

That said, a friend of mine grew up on Eastern Parkway and Washington, and now lives in south park slope (sunset park). Her words: "What do they call that now? Prospect Heights? It used to be Crown Heights.."

How is it that there can be so many different takes on what a neighborhood is called?

In my mind, the logical Eastern Boundry would be the end of 11238 zip...

The 11238 zip code changes to 11216 on the east side of Franklin Ave.

The building in that link is on Bergen, not St. Marks.

Actually, I think the building has entrances on both streets. The one in the photo, while listed as Bergen Street, is actually on St. Mark's, across the street from the Jewish Hospital.

anyone here live in one of the 4th floor (2bd) balcony duplex apartments at 551 prospect? we saw these when they became available but we had to wait to move... my partner and i are interested in either one for july 1. if you're planning on moving please give us a call.

Don't kid yourselves, most people in those buildings are paying an average of $1,600 or more a month. Already this is too much for crown heights, but that's not considering that some of the "one bedroom" units call the windowless closet a bedroom.
I don't know who pays the rent for you people who "don't mind" the lack of services (heat, hot water, cooking gas, electricity, windows that keep the draft out), but I couldn't live with handing over my hard earned money to a company like alma.

I got out as soon as I could, and now live in Sunset Park.

I love it, by the way - lots of groceries, good transit, places to eat, life on the street, diversity - pretty much everything that crown heights did not have (and for $400 less a month for a larger and nicer 1 bedroom). Even my commute is easier.

If anyone knows him, say hello to Buster. He lives at the church across the street, and was a great neighbor - probably the only good memory I have of prospect place.

$1600 each person?!!! i guess maybe for a one-bedroom... we're not paying nearly that much each (for a two-bedroom). and all our bedrooms have windows even!! we did choose the cheapest choice available. all that facing manhattan costs more stuff seemed silly. i choose sunlight over tall building views.

i agree that most of the units are overpriced though. i was just sick of living in 100 year old buildings that could never get clean and where the ceiling was always falling down on my head, and so the newness, plus the rent-stabilization, won over despite alma.

and fresh direct will be my new best friend until the mysterious grocery store opens up.
