I havn't seen mentioned so far:

Key Foods on 5th Ave and about Sterling

Anthony's Pizza on 7th and 14th: brick oven neapolitan pizza doesn't get better, and the cannoli is to die for

I like Anthony's (have only been once).

Key Foods on 5th is one of the better ones around, but since I have car, I'm all about the Fairway now (used to go to Gowanus Pathmark).

(ugh. I hope this doesn't turn into another co-op discussion! )

    um, no DUH.
    sorry, I'm hungover.

Key Food on 5th (and I guess Sterling) is great, its clean and has very roomy isles. not exactly cheaper than Fresh Direct though, if I had a car, my ass would definitely check out Fairway. the Key Food on 5th has excellent Produce. Key Food on 7th? ca-ca.

Best Loaf - Lopez Bakery - 5th ave bet 18 th and 19th St. The bread is very good and cheap. I always get the 7 grain. They make a nice loaf, but stay away from the pastry. The bread is baked fresh every day, but the other stuff tends to be stale. Haven't tried the tamales yet.

Bakery - Two Little Red Hens - 8th Ave. They're expensive, but so good.

Bodega/small grocer - La Dolce Vita - 7th Ave - Clean store and nice owner, also has a good beer selection

Toy Store - Toy Space on 7th ave around 13th - Nice selection of toys, if a bit overpriced. This place has saved me on a few occasions when I had to get a quick gift for a kid. There's also a place on 5th ave, but I can't remember the name.

Children's Shoes - Windsor Shoes - Prospect Park West - The staff is very helpful and they have a good selection.

    Pizza - Pino's La Forchetta - 7th Ave - classic pizza joint

Coffee Shop - 6th ave and 12th St - Red Horse Cafe - good coffee and not crowded

Sandwich shop - Pollios - 5th Ave - Good hoagies and specialty foods. It has a nice, neighborhood feel.

I've been wanting to try Red Horse since I watched it being painted/built. What's it like inside? Do they have sandwiches or just cookies and stuff? Is there wifi? Are there lots o' mommies/strollers?

The ceilings are high and the seating is comfortable. I didn't see many kids, maybe one or two and they were not running around. It's not a 'bring the kids to storytime' kind of place. There's wifi. I think there's sandwiches, but I'm not sure about that.

Flexichick wrote: Deborah is the devil????? Your dog must be speaking to her in tongues,    because she's such a sweet doggie. We go to the park together all the time. She doesn't like to walk on a leash too much, but she's a happy, sweet dog (she's afraid of cats after one got her good in the face). Kids always pet (read: smack her in the head) her and she's very patient and gentle with them.
it's a puppyhood animosity. we used to live near Deborah's store.
and whenever kika and i walked past it, Deborah would rush inside to grab her toy,
rush back to the front door, plop the toy on the ground and under snarled breath
-- give kika the look of death

"see this toy baitch, it's mine! this store is mine! the Wascomat6500 Jr.? MINE! IT'S ALL MINE!
yeah. that's right. keep walking. don't make me open up a can of whup ass. cuz i will!"

they've been together at the park chasing balls and stuff and they're fine offleash.
just that Deborah gets all territorial when it comes to her store
i figure she's had negative episodes with other dogs about her store and now preaches a philosophy of preemption :D

Ok, I can see that. There's nothing but love between me and Debs.

So, I just took a HUGE walk in the direction that I don't normally go.

I went to Lenny's Pizza and had a sicilian slice that was very good. The regular looked good, but I was v. hungry and the sicilian looked more filling. A friendly, old-skool pizzeria. Good call, Idlewild!

I also passed a place I forgot to mention before Kitchen Bar on 6th (around 18/19th). Out of the way, but good food, reasonable prices and they deliver. Friendly owner and tasty stuff (salads, small plates (e.g. 3 mini hamburgers), regular-sized entrees).

I want to try the place next door (Bar-B-Q). Has anybody been there yet?

I'm glad your lunch turned out good. Mine sucked. i went into Midwood to Olympic Pita. What a dump. Tell me you brought me back a slice or some bbq chicken. The worst part is I have to bike for a few hours to kill off the blood sugar and calories. At least Lenny's would have been worth it. Ten again they have good curry chicken at the food stands in Drummer's Circle.

on my walk i found this (new?) place on PPW called "elora's". spanish and mexican. menu looks good, and they have margarita happy hour.

    i saw we initiate SWANDIVE

Elora's has been around for ages. I think it's "eh". I really want to try Taqueria D.F. on 5th near 20th.

I can't SWANDIVE for another week or two (too many plans and they all involve food/drink - bad for the wallet and the waistline)

i've done taqueria DF, and their menu freaks me out. there's a lot of weird meat on there. i don't remember what kind, exactly, but it was something like lung or tripe or brain tacos. creepy.

I have the Taqueria D.F. menu in front of me and the only thing on it that I can see you might think is "weird" is the goat meat. I know that Sabor a Mexico" on the next block has lengua (tongue) and some other things and that there are places on 5th that have guinea pig, but D.F is pretty "tame"

it wasn't tongue. while i think tongue is absolutely gross, i grew up with a mother who loved it. as for goat, i have lots of jamaican friends.

seriously, i have to find their menu amist the mess in here, but it was like lung burritos

Hmmmm....here's their Menu Pages menu, which pretty much matches the one I just picked up today:

    http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=10326&neighborhoodid=116&cuisineid=43

Mine says "Choice of meat: pork, spicy pork, pork sausage, steak, spicy steak, roasted chicken & goat meat"

The rest is soup, salad, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, quesadillas and rotisserie chicken.

Nothing at all that raises my eyebrows........Not sure if they've changed the menu or if you're thinking of a different place

You haven't lived until you've had Mexican tongue in your mouth. Tacos Nuevos makes it with a great green and/or red sauce. I'll leave the guinea pig to the more adventureous types. Gp is just another name for a rat.

I'm not a tongue fan. Too spongey. I tried it once in Isla Mujeres (Mexico) at a roadside stand that was bursting with locals at 3am. Not my thing at all, even though I know it's part of their culture.

No GP for me, either. I try not to eat anything that people keep as pets. I don't have a lot of rules, but that's one of them

    Subject: My reliables

Park Slope Barber Shop - best music in town, plus a good cut.
    Wide booze selection at Xmas.
Conn Muff - Wish the Starbucks would close, and the Muff moves in!
Neergaard. 5th Ave for emergencies, the newly renovated 7th Ave. anytime else.
La Bagel Delight - at both 7th Avenue locations.
    Pino's. Old-school pie.
Zuzu's Petals - great flowers and a large dog, too.
Prospect Park. Thank the Lord and Olmstead for this green gem.
Tarzian Hardware. Yep, it's Lowe's for the big stuff, but when something small goes ...
5th Avenue Key Food. Puts all NYC supermarkets to shame.

The guinea pig is a great delicacy for Peruvian locals, and is offered on almost all menus, and is considered a necessity for any important feast. In the cathedral in Cuzco, there is a painting of the Last Supper that looks like many others, except that smack in the middle of the table there is a roasted guinea pig, lying on its back, all fours extended into the air. A bit weird for sure.
