I'm an IBM guy, but I'm sure I could figure out how to install your drive if you bought a replacement. The USB external would work for you too, you just need a USB hub to go with it if all your USB ports are used up.

I talked with an Apple repair guy and he told me that an external drive is a BAD idea and that I should just swap the internal drive. My Dad is an idiot about all things Apple anyway. Time to invest in a dust brush and lock the kitties in the bedroom while I do this.
