Watched "District 9" on Wed night - loved it. The alien rendering is outstanding and the dark humor is great. Do watch it for the jello explosion gun fights... unless, of course, you don't like the idea of painting the walls with your adversaries...

Watched "The Hurt Locker" on Thurs. Fantastic, as well. Plenty of exploding people, as well.

I felt the same way - I guess that it's a fine, and quite personal, line between "beautifully understated," and "eh, I liked it, but coulda used a li'l something more."

"All Of Me" with Steve Martin.

    "Law Abiding Citizen"

" The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3", with Denzel Washington and John Travolta.

I enjoyed them all. :thumleft: :thumleft:

^I can't watch John Travolta in anything recent (post Pulp Fiction or so, he just creeps me out in everything else and his acting = meh) but the original "Taking of Pelham 1,2, 3" was really good. I saw "All of Me" (love Steve Martin). I'll check on "Law Abiding Citizen"

Is Cold Souls on dvd yet? It was kind of slow, but I enjoyed it. It just needed better music.

HALP! My Netflix queue is alarmingly low (just 4 movies!).

I just watched "Crazy Heart" and liked it.

Can't remember but have you seen Nurse Jackie? I've also been watching Primeval and I like it a lot.

I love Nurse Jackie, but canceled my SHO (budget cutbacks) so only saw the first season

Shhhhh, don't tell anyone but I like My Name is Earl. I'm only on the 1st season but it's entertaining so far.

Not sure if it's out on DVD yet, but I just saw Invictus on a plane and thought it was great. It was total serendipity, because normally the sports angle would turn me off and I never would have seen it.

Delightfully fucked up and available on Watch Instantly - The Vicious Kind

    Thanks, guys.

Invictus isn't out yet. I added The Vicious Kind, but while I have a lot of stuff on instant, I am running out of things to put in my disc queue. I've already downgraded my membership from 3 to 2 at a time, but may go down to 1 at this point.

Caseopele, I tried "My Name is Earl" and I just couldn't do it.

Looking back over my top rated on MovieLens, though based on others you've seen I'm guessing you've seen some of these.

The Riches (it's on instant play, though) I love this--Eddie Izzard as a gypsy, like the kind I grew up around in the South.

    Dummy (with Adrien Brody)

    After the Wedding

    Whale Rider

    Calendar Girls

    Dirty Pretty Things

    Matchstick Men

    Monsoon Wedding

My Life in Pink (Ma vie en rose)

    Mumford

    Rabbit-Proof Fence

    Clockwatchers

    EdTV

Monsieur Ibrahim (Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran)

My Life Without Me (good, but sad)

Thanks, OQ. I saw many of those, but added a few that I hadn't seen (Monsieur Ibrahim, Clockwatchers, and Dummy).

I loved The Riches and am so sad it was canceled. One of my favorite celeb sightings in NYC was seeing Eddie Izzard having dinner with Cher. She was the only one wearing makeup that night :-)

Don't know how you feel about documentaries, but I'm recommending the following to anyone who has an open mind about the genre.

    1) Spellbound
    2) Mad Hot Ballroom
    3) Resolved
    4) Very Young Girls
    5) By The People: The Election of Barak Obama

In terms of mainstream movies, I'd go with the following to make you laugh
    1) The Hangover
    2) Couples Retreat
    3) Role Models

You reminded me to add the Hangover to my queue.

If you liked Role Models, I recommend Grandma's Boy.

I'm sure I've rec'd this before and I'm not sure if it's your type of show Flexi, but the bf and I both LOVE "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". A friend made me watch it and I was not expecting to like it but it's pretty damn funny, especially when Danny Devito joins the cast.

^ I tried watching it and thought "meh".

I was really into "United States of Tara" - I don't have SHO any more, so only saw the first season on DVD. Highly recommend it. Love Toni Collette.

Have started watching "Deadwood", which I like, but don't love.

OQ - Thanks for recommending "Monsieur Ibrahim". I enjoyed it. Who doesn't love a little Omar Sharif? And that kid was great.

I also rented "Clockwatchers", forgetting that I had seen in already. It was enjoyable, but not great. The cast made that movie. A decent 90 minute diversion.

Caseo - maybe that's it! Not that I don't have trash in my family, but being a first-generation American, it's not the same as American trailer-park type trash :-)

    (500) Days of Summer was good, as was Up in the Air. Didn't like Where the Wild Things Are as much as I thought I would...
