I'm not endorsing the article but I thought the point of the NYT was that people--right or wrong and whomever they may be--in both the mainstream and, especially, indie rock circles are noticing the presence of black rockers more and more these days, not that black culture had just discovered rock music, or that black rockers are a new thing, both of which would be preposterous assumptions.

Still bullshit. Musicians have always noticed other musicians whatever background. And you know there have always been a bountiful number of black rock musicians out there. The media on the other hand, and whatever idiotic angle they want to take to write an article...well, has little bearing on reality.

Note: I didn't get a chance to read said article, so I'm just guessing at its stupidity. But I doubt I'm too far off from what I hear.

Without wanting to get into a protracted discussion on the subject, let me just say that it's precisely not about musicians but, as I mentioned in my post, mainstream and/or indie rock circles in general.

Oh, and btw, as a rock musician--and person of color--I have many times gotten the slightly surprised look from non-musicians when they try to put together in their heads the music with the person. (I'm sure you know about this all too well.) I don't mind. I've seen it happen to white horn players, too, when they mention they play in a salsa or merengue band.

Yeah, I agree. The odd thing I've found about Park Slope, and why I'm not surprised to see such a negative reaction to the word "hipster" here, is that this neighborhood has the cutting-edge equivalent of historic downtown St. Charles. :P

As much as you criticize "hipsters" for all wearing the same thing, I see plenty of people donning the "Park Slope" uniform. There are lots and lots of people out there who choose these little subsets to reside in for whatever reason, be it comfort, fear of your innate self, etc.
