Weird Experience

Had something weird happen yesterday. I was out walking and ended up going by the old canning factory at 3rd av & 3rd st. I've been there before for rooftop films in the summer, and I know there are art studios etc. in the space.

Anyway, the metal gate that leads into the interior courtyard was open so I walked in to check it out. It seemed sorta open to the public - there are entrances to various workspaces inside the courtyard including a neon sign shop. There was an alley going towards the back and I started walking down it.

As I'm doing so a guy comes out of the real estate office and asks if he can help me. I said something very similar to "I'm sorry, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be here but I love the space and just wanted to check it out." He turns around without a word and goes into the office.

I figure that's not a great sign and that maybe I'm really not supposed to be there. So I start meandering back towards the entrance. As I do so, I hear some noises behind me. He's outside doing something and all of a sudden the metal gate starts going down, trapping me inside the courtyard.

So all of a sudden I'm in the Temple of Doom and wondering WWIJD? Fortunately the gate is slow as hell and I get out just by jogging a little. WTF? I guess I must have been trespassing - though you would think that people are coming in all the time to check out the space etc. And there seem to be shops and studios that are open to the public. I'm not really sure what the hell was going on there, but I assume he was trying to trap me in order to get the cops over. What ever happened to asking someone to leave?

I think he thought you were some kind of criminal.

Was your hair brushed , and shoe laces tied?

If not , that might have spooked him.

    Glad you made it out!

Big Guy is big as in tall , not a tall huge monster.

If that's what he means by "big guy"...If not , than I wouldn't know.

I can't stand a hairy chest, a little hair I'll deal with , but if it's enough to braid and style , noooooooo!

I once turned down a marriage proposal for that reason alone.....he had on a button down shirt , and the hair was out of control, lol , I said Nope, he said he'd shave it.....too late I already saw.

you turned down a marriage proposal because the guy was hairy?
  • em26

Yes , I have the right!

There were no feelings there from my end.

Had I not seen the hair, I would have accepted , we would have gotten to know each other better, and then if I saw the hairy chest after developing feelings for him, I would have liked him too much to hold his hairiness against him.

So , since I hadn't given myself time to fall for the guy , it was easy to say no to him.

It's okay , he got married 3 years later.

Y'know what's even weirder Big Guy? That you posted something interesting, and oddly frightening, and now the post has devolved into lame jokes.
Do you think he knew you were still there when he locked the gates? Were the realtors having some sort of Open House? Next time I visit I"m bringing my sleeping bag and a flask!

I cannot relate to your urge to explore mysterious spaces that might belong to others on any level. Although I enter that building during movie screenings, I stay out of it at other times, just like I stay out of the Brooklyn Lyceum after its closed, even if the janitor did forget to lock the door and I have seen movies there before. The last time curiousity led me into unchartered commercial space, I was in the 4th grade. With curiosity like yours, Big Guy, you better be built like the Terminator with eyes for empty elevator shafts.

That's crazy and sounds like a story I lived too! Since then I've come to appreciate a little plush foliage. It's the hair on the back like blades of grass that is horrifying to me.

I'm fascinated by stuff like that. I'm the guy way at the end of the subway platform looking up the tunnel and wondering how long it would take to walk to the next station. Won't be doing that anytime soon however.

i'm not opposed to tunnel running

exploring space that I might or might not be allowed in is one of my favorite pastimes. I found myself in the governers mansion in oaxaca city once.

How are you going to know what is there if you don't explore?
