Thank god for hipsters

I'm on the top floor of my building and yesterday I looked out and saw some people on the roof across the street. Normally when there are folks up there it's a little crazy. Beer bottles everywhere, lots of yelling, garbage etc. One guy used to tie up his pit bull up there for hours. Also lots of running around, throwing things off the building etc. Yesterday however I was surprised to see a bunch of hipsters up there. I watched them for a while and was pleasantly surprised by a number of things:

1. No yelling. Most conversation seemed to be at a pretty reasonable level.
2. No loud-ass music. If they had a radio, I didn't hear it.
3. No garbage being thrown around.
4. When they were done, their chairs were left neatly stacked and everything was clean.

The whole thing was quite pleasant and I thought "hey, I can work with these guys". I know we can all be annoyed by hipsters, myself included. But if having hipsters around means not listening to someone's car stereo's bass at 1 AM, picking my way around garbage, chicken bones & dog crap on the sidewalk, and listening to a bunch of guys acting like fools on the street all night, I'm all for it. So I say again, thank god for hipsters.

why dont you just go ahead and say BLACK PEOPLE? If you are gonna write such a post, be honest with yourself and us, and cut to the chase...

Honestly, I've met plenty of asshole white people and plenty of asshole black people since I've been in Brooklyn. Neither race seems to have the market cornered. I'm almost starting to think that *GASP* it isn't a racial thing.

I have, however, met more nice black people than nice white people. Go figure. I assumed that with as few of "us" as there are around in Crown Heights, other whites would be all "hey whitey!" or something. If anything, they go out of their way to snub. I've had many black people go out of their way to help me, especially when I'm about to pull a stupid move out of sheer ineptitude.

Which seems to happen _far_ more than I would like to admit. Hmm.

I'm not concerned about their race. There are plenty of people of various races on the block who don't act like that at all. Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm judging on the basis of behavior.

Next you'll be attacking the Undead! For moaning to loud and eating people. Gak!

That's a good point. I would have no problem with undead on the block, if they didn't moan a lot & eat people. Again, behavior.

Hipsters come in all colors. Why are you so racist? Often we project in others what we see/hate in ourselves.

BigGuy seemed to be drawing a contrast between people who are considerate toward other people around them and people who are not. If anyone assumes that people who are inconsiderate toward those around them are of a specific race, they need to take a look at their own prejudices.

anyway, i don't think it was us. we were chillin up on the roof and watching the planes fly overhead though and i turned to my neighbor and commented on the complaint about plane noise and how much people on this board complain about things in the neighborhood. then a friend set up a bunch of photo equipment and took pics of all of us and my neighbor said "maybe all the flashes will get a complaint post made about us on the board!"

Themfa's inference is obviously correct. But who cares?!? #-o It doesn't make the behavior he's describing any less relevant or less irritating to neighbors who have no choice but to tolerate it. Instead of being distracted by the crunching sound as Themfa avoids saying as much, shouldn't the reader come away asking if in fact there is a problem with certain residents perpetuating litterred, dog-poop stained streets, trash being hurled off roofs, and excessivly loud music at inappropriate hours?

p.s. izisharp --- yesterday i heard a noise and looked out to someone in the st.john's building throwing trash out their window --- luckily the trash stayed on the st.john's building side of the fence, but i was like WTF?! and the trash was being throw from 3 floors up!!!!! :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil:
