Fishers Supermarket

I just moved to Franklin Ave. from Akron, Ohio. The area is what it is for now. I hope it gets better. I came across Fishers Supermarket the other day. Its a nice store. Well stocked and friendly staff. I met the manager Tony and he gave me the 35 year history of the store in five minutes. He also told me that in june 08 they are closing for the summer to reopen as a more natural/organic market with 24 hour service. I cant wait, I hate shopping in the city $$$$$ and I perfer to shop with community based establishments.

wow, that's really great news. a 24 hour supermarket would be a fantastic asset, and organic produce would also be great. what are the cross streets of this market?

thats great to hear. i like shopping there. they have all the basics cheaper than what it will cost elsewhere. and to hear that they are going organic and natural is wonderful. i just hope when they are done it will be affordable. im going to ask the manager.

ITheir freezer section used to be funny. They just threw everything in there. Ice cream next to burgers next to peas next to.....

Is it still like that? Haven't been there in some time.

i am just glad that in this crappy area that this store is here. they have soy milk organic salads and amys. i think they are great.

they also run the 'pioneer' market 1 block south of the parkway, which is a disaster.

in either store-- any store in brooklyn ,really-- check your expiration dates. on EVERYTHING. They sell, without remorse, expired eggs, sour milk, moldy bread and rotten meat.

considering the condo development next door in the old mazon's lot, fishers getting an upgrade isn't surprising-- and is totally welcome.

i'm still gonna be looking at the labels though. anytime bread is on sale at 2 for $4, make sure they didn't expire 3 days ago. cuz it's definitely happened.

i been shopping there for three years. the only problem i ever had there was when my shopping bag handle broke and some items broke. i took the bag back to the store and the manager or owner replaced everything.

i think that even if you shop in fairway people have to watch the dates. i never had a problem at fishers. but the market on washington is a different story. why do the stock boys there drive bmw's are they doing something else there?

I don't think this is just a Brooklyn thing. Selling past the expiration date happens all over NYC. But generally, if you keep your receipt and you notice that the items you bought are past the expiration date, most storeowners are pretty good about replacing those items.

I have been shopping at Fishers for 6 months now and all i have to say is good things. The store is always in order, its organized, clean and the owners are nice people. Usually when I shop at other supermarkets, they always end up not having an item or two. But not Fishers, they have everything i need all in one shop. I usually shop there on weekends cuz thats when im free. The guy who works there on Sundays is really cool. Hes real quick with things and helpful. He always helps me get things off the high shelves, hes so funny and really hot!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess shopping at Fishers on Sundays beats going to church , huh?!!!!!!!!!!!

the guys at fishers sell organic chicken and organic ground beef. i went there and bought a couple of packs today. maybe all the people talking negative about them on this blog should go a buy a couple a packs to show support in this change.

my family and i live on eastern parkway for 45 years. when my mom first came to this country from west africa the only place she bought groceries from was fishers. fishers was a small mom and pop operation. i remember going there with my mom. i could never forget how my mother who did not speak any english made me ask mr fisher for credit. he always helped my family, and never said no to us. and from what i understand others also. its amazing to see how this family run operation has grown over the years. the other day i was speaking to tony and i told him this story. he smiled and said, "thank you". i noticed when i mentioned mr fisher his eyes got waterey and a tear ran down the side of his face. i asked him why are you sad? he replied, "every time i hear how my dad helped people it touches me". i didnt mean to hit a nerve, but it was a fond memory and one i wanted to share with him. to this end i would like to close by saying thank you to the fisher family. thank you for all the years fishers has be there for the people. thank you for investing in this community when no one else would. thank you for helping people like my mother who are no longer here to tell you. good luck with all of the future plans and may god bless you all.

I like Fisher's a lot. My only gripe is that they don't carry any fresh basil. But then, nobody this side of Flatbush regularly carries it. Sometimes the Key Foods on Washington does, but not often enough for me to bother.

I've been able to get fresh basil at the produce stand on Lincoln and Nostrand, but you have to ask.

The other day I was not felling well so I called key food for a delivery. The person who answered the phone could hardly speak english and was very rude to me. 90 minutes later I got some of the groceries I ordered. The butter tasted like soap, the bread was expired, and the milk was leaking. I told a friend what happened and she told me to call fishers. When I called I spoke to the manager and he took his time on the phone with me. I gave him my list over the phone and he said he will call back with the amount. About 10 minutes after he called I got all of the food that I ordered. From now on Fishers is on my speed dial. 718778542 thank you

Is it just me or are all these inspirational and pro-Fisher's stories from unregistered guests a little fishy? I mean, I like the place alright. It's one of the better grocery stores in Crown Heights, as far as I can tell, but this is a little ridiculous.

Forget about Key Food, they're mad nasty. Met Food is a much better choice on Nostrand Ave. but they're smaller so you lose some of the selection.

Best of all but a little farther out is the Super Food Town on Fulton and Brooklyn Avenue. This is the best in the vicinity in my opinion.

Which Keyfood are we talking about, the one on Washington?
I actually like them- the guys are all really nice and helpful ( I can't tell you how many times I've requested something- they always fulfill it)- and as the years have gone on, they keep adding new (yuppie-type) things (ya know, ORGANIC).

Although one time I was deathly ill and I called them for delivery- the "guy" wasn't in and didn't come in till late afternoon/early evening. That sucked, but I still like them.

Hmm... I haven't found Key Foods to be "nasty", but since I prefer to patronize the smaller stores, I just go there to pick up the few items I can't find elsewhere. Still, I can't imagine them being particularly helpful.

I find Fine Foods on Kingston to be a bit nasty (what is that smell?), but they're the only store in the area that sells daikon root and the people who work there are friendly and helpful.

I heard that this store is closing in june
