What's going on at 9th and 7th?

Subject: What's going on at 9th and 7th?

So for about twenty minutes earlier, we heard some loud dog barking on 9th street, and thought someone's dog was going crazy. (I don't mean, "Oh, I see another dog" crazy, but rather "Oh, I'm going to kill something" crazy.)

Now we see that 9th Street is closed off, cop cars are everywhere at the corner of 7th, blocking traffic coming down from 8th, and it looks like there's a cop near my house with a SWAT(?) helmet on. (That is total speculation, but you don't see cops with helmets often.)

Anyone know what's up?

I called the 78th precinct, but the guy who answered had no idea and couldn't get why I was concerned (should we leave? Stay in the rear? Does it not matter?). Can you see from where you are? I'm on the odd-numbered side of ninth, so I feel like I'm next to what's happening and can't see anything.

Gridskipper says it's a hostage situation. I got out the subway about an hour ago but couldn't tell what was happening. Apparently it's still going on.

I am across 9th....I have heard them repeat "Put down your weapon" several times. Still going on for sure. Can't really see much, but swat is all over the place, spot light is on the house, cops everywhere, bull horn going.

Is it between 7th & 8th? Or 7th & 6th? I'm between 7th & 6th and from here it looks like the police vehicles are all focused on our building or the one next door, but I wonder if they're just parked here and the action is in the next block.

It's 9th btwn 7th and 8th. I saw a few cops escorting people to their apts from the train station presumably. I can't quite make out what the bullhorn is saying. I'm just hoping everything ends peacefully.

I'm nearby - I can hear, but I can't see. I heard the cops calling for someone named David. They keep asking him to step up to the window or door. It does appear that he has a gun. I can't tell if there are actually hostages.

The full SWAT deal is out there. This is very very serious.

It was definitely still going on when I got off the F at 9th and 7th. There was a hostage negotiation team truck in the middle of the intersection. That was about 45 minutes ago.

Anyone have links to news stories about it? I couldn't find the mention on gothamist.com.

if he does kill anyone, people looking to find cheap housing in park slope would have a good chance.

Gothamist just updated their post to add:

UPDATE: The BNN is reporting that the incident is the result of a family dispute, and the hostage negotiation squad has been called to the scene.

It's a guy who doesn't want to come out of his house, and the cops have blown it 100x out of proportion. That's it.

Apparently there are no hostages. Just a guy that got drunk, had an arguement with family/friends, fired some shots, and is now holed up in his apartment with his gun. They are still trying to get him to come out. I wish he would hurry up and do it, its late and I can't sleep with the bull horn going.

Yeah, because the whole gun and hostage thing is just a misunderstanding

Yeah well I happen to know everyone involved personally, and there are no hostages so why don't you keep your snide comments to yourself until you know what the situation really is "homeowner."

Yeah, a drunk guy firing off a gun in a crowded neighborhood doesn't really warrant a police response at all. Especially if he's friends with Restless Native.

So, they should just ignore the fact that gunshots have been fired?

Are you a cop? Do you have any training in police work? Ave you ever seen a disturbed person with a gun? I'd say no. You should keep you comments to yourself about something that you no nothing about.

I spoke to one of the cops at the scene....he said the real cause of the problem was that the guy couldn't get Restless Native out of his house and had to call for reinforcements. :D
