Just walking in and out of there made me depressed, I think the place is ghastly. And so at odds with the reasons I live in this neighborhood (and NYC). Ah well.

What the ever loving fuck is going on? It's a goddamn 7-11! What is so amazingly wonderful about it? There are thousands of them and not one thing special about them. This is NYC, I am at a loss trying to understand why anyone would be excited about a 7-11 opening up here. Please, someone enlighten me!

Again, I apologize if I offended anyone and this rant isn't aimed at any one person. I'm so tired right now that I can't even remember who had good things to say about 7-11.
Honestly, its the Citibank ATM, not the 7-11 per-se. Slushies are cool, but the novelty of reliving childhood will wear off soon. The novelty of NOT paying $20 a month extra to get cash out will not wear off.

    Now that I can understand.

a fucking men. Last month I had $8 in atm fees from the atms themselves, AND another 8 or so from citibank.
I love how they're putting a bank of america across from the hospital when there's an atm station right off 9th st...and no citibank anything (until this) except all the way down near union. Lame

I may not be too crazy about the 7-11 while sober, but I'm pretty sure I'll change my tune one of these nights stumbling home from Commonwealth in the wee hours.

I wonder if Jill will be kind enough to dump some liquor in my slurpee? Is that crossing the line?

So I assume you prefer the dim lights and the stench of body odor at a privately owned bodega, complete with the very inviting floor to ceiling bullet proof glass concealing the cashier.

    Whatever floats your boat!

Bright lights and the smell of hazelnut coffee upset you? Wow. I might not like to drink hazelnut coffee-but, I think the smell is nice.
and, bright lights IMO in a store are a plus-LOL! But, to each their own.

glad to hear it's open though.

No, I prefer the normal lighting, and friendly, non-odiferous guys at "My Favorite Grocery" on the opposite corner.

I don't like super-bright glaring fluorescents and strong artificial smells. So shoot me already.

Yes, because every little grocery store has bulletproof glass, smelly workers, and dim lights. And really, the suburbanization of NYC will be totally awesome. Maybe we'll get really lucky and one of these will open!

Ironically, the things you mention that offend you are actually things that attract most people. The bright lights usually discourages crime, and many people enjoy the aroma of coffee. When people bring up excuses why they dislike 7-Elevens, they usually bring up things like teenagers loitering outside, excess litter, and the additional car traffic to the area. None of which apply here.

I love the smell of coffee (like the coffee I'm drinking right now). It's the smell of artificial flavors I don't like.

I'm not a big fan of artificial flavors either. However, you really can't escape it nowadays. Just about every chain (7-Eleven, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, etc.) sell them.

I'll have to check out the 5th Avenue 7-Eleven this weekend (I live in New Jersey). Most of the other 7-Elevens I frequent don't have that aroma you described. Unless maybe I'm just immune to it! :)

I'm in Crown Heights and haven't seen any here. The only bulletproof glass is on the outside window they use for after hours sales.

I used to see them in some stores near Brooklyn College, and in parts of Williamsburgh.

I guess you haven't taken a stroll down 3rd ave between 14th and 15th st.

EDIT: Nevermind, MK, you beat me to it.

Do those Taco Bell things really exist? I mean I've seen the double-upped ones, like Dunkin-Baskins, but JEEZ!!

Also, there was a 7-11 across from Laguardia Community College in Queens for a while now. I guess it was just a matter of time before they decided to move in.

First raccoons, then tornadoes, now 7-11. Brooklyn has officially turned into the sticks.

I'm not that into 7-11s now, but I have fond memories of being a loitering teen trying to get adults to buy us beer. This was in the 80s in a small town in Northern California.

For many years, Tom Waits has been living in an even smaller town about twenty minutes away and he hangs out quite a bit in my old hometown. My little brother once saw Waits at that same 7-11.

I can't think of many cooler or funnier places to spot Waits.

So how's the 7-Eleven coming along? Has the neighborhood fallen into disrepair? Have property values plummeted? Have the lowly patrons caused the crime rate to spike upward?

C'mon. All the "naysayers" have been uncharacteristically quiet the last couple of months. Let's hear from y'all. :)

The litter level on 5th Avenue has definitely gone up! If the street is any indication, the hotdogs are quite popular.

Well, they are 2 fer $2! Find that somewhere else in NYC these days.

I have noticed the skater kids like to loiter there. Its fun to watch them trip when their pant legs get entangled with skateboard wheels.
