Vergeon is someone who's never had sex. I believe that's the Goethe way of spelling it.

    Yes I love the avatar!

I have a question Flexi: do you do anything else for fitness apart from yoga? I ask because I run, go to spinning classes and do pilates, as well as yoga. But I actually hate running, spinning and pilates. Life's a bit short to devote regular time to things you hate. I'm wondering if just doing yoga (and walking my dog) will be enough to stay fit in the future....

Precious - I've been slacking a bit, but yoga 3x a week or so, walking (fast) 5-7x a week for a few miles and (very) occasional bike riding.

That said, I ate French fries with TWO sides of bernaise sauce and about 6 beers for dinner last night (that's what happens when you go out at 4:30), so I am not the best person to be giving advice right now

Imported beer and the fries....well, I was at a bistro, so I guess I can say "French" (never "freedom" - that was just plain stupid), but I think fries are Belgian originally, no?

Nope! Peruvian. Taters are from South America. As are tomatoes which makes the ketchup that goes on the fries and pumpkins that the Bishop Ford school kids drop off the Prospect Expressway overpass on PPW.

Flexi may assault me for this, but yoga's not going to do much for you cardio-wise. Not to knock its other benefits: mental, flexibility... um, the healthful purging of bodily gases...

If you're walking your dog a lot, that's one thing, but I'm a big believer that there's no substitute for vigorous (i.e., breaking a sweat) aerobic exercise regularly (at least every other day for half an hour or something). But then, I'm crazy: I like running.

Do you like real (non-spinning) cycling? (I think working out on those godawful indoor machines has done more than anything else to make people hate exercise.) Swimming? Anything involving moving fast?

Sorry, that's like saying marinara sauce is Peruvian. I don't think the Incas (or whatever, I'm not an anthropologist) were deep-frying their blue spuds, putting them in cones and dunking them in mayonnaise.

I do believe, however, that they climbed to the top of Andean passes to drop massive pumpkins on the heads of their enemies.

I'm a lover, not a fighter, so no assault from me. I walk (vigorously - definitely breaking a sweat) 5-7x a week for at least 30 minutes (often an hour). There are SOME forms of yoga that will really raise your heartrate, but I find it helps my flexibility AND tones my muscles and calms my mind (although I have PLENTY of moments when I'm thinking "I hate this fucking pose! When will it end?!)

On the flip side, no one wants to look at an avatar of me after doing a couple loops of Prospect Park.

I kind of disagree with this. A vigorous vinyasa class can definitely be a cardio workout. I think the area you're shortchanging if you only do yoga is strength training. I don't think you get enough strength benefits from yoga unless you're doing two hours of ashtanga every day. Otherwise, you need to hit the weights once in a while. It will make your yoga better too. I see a lot of women in my classes who just don't have the upper body strength to get into certain poses.

a few loops? I'm asuming you mean on a bike (well, I run 4-5 loops now but am training for the ING) anyway, if you DO mean loops on a bike, post some pics of the bike or use that as your avatar. I'd love to see some more bike porn on this site!

I agree with you that a vinyasa class can be good cardio. As for strength training, I already do free weights.

I spent years and years running. I ran competitively from the age of 10 or 11. I've had enough! I'm not into cycling at all either. Anyway, doctors say that brisk walking is enough to keep your heart healthy, and that's all I'm interested in. I don't have weight/fat to lose: I'm merely trying to keep things ticking over. The one other thing I do quite like is kickboxing. However, I don't really want to join any of the gyms around here and I don't know how else I'd find a kickboxing class. Maybe I'll try tae kwon do or aikido instead. Any recs?

The Incan culture was for sure the first to cultivate potatoes - but it is a real stretch (I use that word here to keep this on topic vis-a-vis flexi's avatar  ) to credit them with "french fries" as we know them. And the Belgians were the first to dip fried sliced potatoes in mayo.
