mike dunlapMany of the same people have been hanging out on this block for years. They just live here. I'm sure some may sell drugs occasionally, but most just hang out and do not much. -
Brooklyneyaedited November 2015Hopefully that's the case. There are guys hanging around the neighborhood all the time and I generally wouldn't assume anything shady is going on. There's just something about where they stand and how they look out onto franklin that makes it looks like they're trying to avoid being seen or something. -
mcpoetThey've been working on this space fairly regularly of late. The bar looks complete, Edison bulbs are hung, still a good amount of work to do, but it's looking more and more like a bar. I'd estimate a summer opening, assuming there aren't any issues obtaining a liquor license or anything like that.On a related note, the bodega in the middle of the block that others have mentioned (the one that always seems to have dude's loitering out in front of it who seem to be a bit, uh hyper-vigilant, shall we say), has been closed up for the last week or two. It's unclear to me whether they're closing it or renovating it, but I figured I'd mention it here. Until I had more credible information I didn't want to start another thread. Anyone hear anything about what's going on with this space? -
Z1010PI had the same question about that bodega. It closing up was a shocker, but the dudes that hang in front of it are the worst offenders in terms of saying HORRIBLE SH*T to my wife when she is walking by herself down Franklin. Also, I love that "Edison bulbs are hung" is 100% a requirement of opening a bar now. -
whynot_31edited February 2016I wonder if the new bar will have bespoke artisan tables made from wood reclaimed from bowling alleys. -
iamahmadrabahthey closed for renovations. -
tereketewe left CH a few months ago but i still check in here by habit. This bodega "remodeled" a couple of years ago I thought? As in, new vinyl tiles over the crappy vinyl tiles. There's very few open businesses on Franklin that are a blight. I lived on Franklin and EP for 15 years and... yeah, that place was a disaster all the time. -
BrooklyneyaI think the bar will be done in a few weeks. It looks messy, but the bulk of the work is done. They seem to be working on the final details.
And I was happy see bodega look shut down. I agree about the creepy dudes. Maybe the renovations and temporary shut down will disperse the group and it will re-open as a less shady bodega, though I'm not too hopeful. -

whynot_31edited February 2016BTW, I am kinda sad that the video that the corner guys made of themselves (linked above in June 2015) seems to have been deleted from youtube. -
Z1010PAll of the bodega's exterior signs are down too. While the people who hung outside were @ssholes, I enjoyed the colorful signs, like the ones we just lost to the Dunkin Donuts on the corner of the parkway.Speaking of signs, when they pulled down the awning over the soon-to-be bar. they uncovered a cool hand-painted sign for Sung's Discount something-or-other (you can sort of see it in Whynot's October photos above), with SHOES in big red letters on the Union side. They started to paint over it with white, so I was a little sad, but then they hand-painted it back in! I guess they were just brightening it up, it was quite a surprise that they saved it. Not sure how it will be folded into the bar's name/advertising. -
whynot_31edited February 2016Google's photo of the bodega:

The new bar will be just out of view, on the right.
-
Z1010PGrabbed some pics of the old sign above the new bar. You can see the side one has been repainted.
-
mcpoetThey were working on this space (Brooklyn Union One) last night and it looks pretty much done. I'd imagine they'll be open within the next couple months. -
mugofmead111I vaguely remember that old sign. -
whynot_31Just adding a photo. This thread discusses the NE corner...
-
Z1010PThis one looks aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalmost done.
Also, because we don't have a separate "harrass-y a$$holes" thread, this morning two guys were posted up by the newer deli up the block right by the subway entrance (across from Dunkin Donuts), creating a literal gauntlet that the HIGH SCHOOL girls had to walk through on their way to school, while they made comments to every one that passed and looking/leering down on them from 6 inches away. So I guess even though the mid-block bodega closed, they will just move to another spot so they can do what they do.
Sorry, just had to rant somewhere.

Z1010PDoes anyone have any info on liquor licenses? This place looks like it could open any day.

Brooklyneya@Z1010P I wonder if we can report that. I'm assuming they were grown men and not teen boys? -
mcpoetedited February 2016The sign up over this place says "Union Street Pub" so that may be the actual name of the bar itself. The space looks ready to open any day now. -
whynot_31edited February 2016As of yesterday afternoon, license now active!
Trade name is reportedly Union Street Pub.
...Expect it to be open in 5-4-3-2-

Yep, grown men. So gross.Brooklyneya said:@Z1010P I wonder if we can report that. I'm assuming they were grown men and not teen boys? -
Z1010Pedited February 2016Union Street Pub has a Facebook page up: https://www.facebook.com/unionstreetpub/?fref=tsWhen we passed by last night, they even had the taps installed and the cable TV hooked up, and were having a beer and watching TV after a hard day's work. -
whynot_31edited February 2016Sign:

This shot is too crappy to show it, but they are still arranging some stuff inside.
-
mac1I hope that's just a temporary sign. -
MrBiscoOne of the listed principals (Corey Noble) has listed on his Facebook page that he's owner of Fourth Avenue Pub. If somewhat similar, this bar should be yet another beer-oriented bar for the neighborhood. He also claims to be owner of The Evergreen, which is only a few months old. If true, that's a lot of new bar-ownership in a short amount of time. -
whynot_31Facebook page now states they will open on Monday at 8 PM. -
whynot_31edited March 2016Now open.
Here is their beer menu: https://www.beermenus.com/places/31257-union-street-pub
