Subject: I'm Cold! Is the Heat on Yet?

Please don't post the law about when the heat needs to go on, etc. I know what the law says.

All I want to know is:

Is your heat on yet?

If not, please chime in the first time you feel the heat on in your apartment IF you don't access the thermostat yourself.

(I'm sure this will turn into race relations or the co-op discussion one way or another).

I have 2 and they definitely help.

    But I'm still cold! I know, I'm a freak.

Guess I need to go back to the singles thread and talk about finding a Winter Boyfriend

    I have enough blankets.

Honestly, I'm not looking for suggestions, I just want to know if people have their heat on yet. That's all.

I'm not familiar with the legality of this question. When, by law, do they need to turn your heat on?

I believe the Food Co-op has their heat on.

i don't turn on my heat until it's consistently cold outside... and in the 50's or so.

Heat must be supplied from October 1 through May 31, to tenants in multiple dwellings if: a) the outdoor temperature falls below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, between 6 A.M. and 10 P.M., each apartment must be heated to a temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit; (b) the outdoor temperature falls below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, between the hours of 10 P.M. and 6 A.M., each apartment must be heated to a temperature of at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. (Multiple Dwelling Law § 79)

October 1? Wow, you learn something new every day! :) For some reason, I always thought it was October 15.
And nope, no heat here yet.

The reason I ask is that I'm always cold the first week or two in October and I don't want to bug my landlord unless I know other people have their heat on too.

I know you didn't want to hear the law, but since you posted it: how about getting a thermometer? If your temp's falling below 68/55, you should be getting heat. If not, not. Whether anyone else has theirs on is immaterial.

October heat is always rough, because the temp in a building--wherever the thermostat happens to be--takes a while to catch up with the outside temperature drop. (Not that it's dropped much so far.) If your apartment is actually falling below 68/55, your landlord probably just doesn't know and hasn't suspected it, and should be willing to turn it on.

I always want to err on the side of giving my tenants enough heat anyway. But a thermometer reading is always going to be more persuasive than "But the people on brooklynian.com have their heat on!"

I've been through all of that and they just moved the thermostat into the hallway. The old thermostat was in the warmest room in the house. So...the thermostat location + my general body temperature = the first 2 weeks or so of October being rough for me.

I posted the law since somebody asked....but yes, I have said before "I have a thermostat in my apartment which shows that it's much colder up here than down where the thermostat is. Please raise the heat".

This is the first year I'm dealing with the new thermostat.

I'd never say "people on Brooklynian.com have heat". I just want a general idea of whether or not other people have their heat on so that I know whether it's just me who is cold (which is usually the answer).

Thanks to my jackass super, the heat was blasting my sweaty ass last Sunday when temperatures were climbing into the high 70s. Now that it's actually cold there's NO HEAT.

It might just be you but I'm allways hot so my opinion doesn't really help.

our furnace isn't turned on yet, but likely it should be because of the tenant laws. (flexi, thanks for posting the law. i think i'm the only one on the board who cares if a: i'm cold, and b: if a tenant is cold)

Exactly. I'm always cold...That's why I'm curious if other people have their heat on because I know that my body temperature isn't like most other people.

No heat here. Heard it's feezing in this apt too in the winter. But the temp is fine now. One or two days a couple weeks ago it was cold. But there was a storm then or something.

Probably upper 60s or so. Just chilly in the mornings. Again, I'm always cold so I don't enjoy the first few weeks in October. Once the heat goes on and STAYS on I feel better.

i think i'm colder than everyone in the building because i'm the only one not sharing a bed with someone.

(and PLEASE, this is not meant ot bring up the whole singles/dating thing. it's really just a mere fact without judgement: two people in a bed need fewer blankets.)

I'm freezing today--no heat here. My whole family is always cold, we have extremely low blood pressure. Technically we should be dead.

Ok, Cate, you're going to be my thermometer. Please tell me when YOUR heat is on, since I know we will both be unhappy until it does

Yep, will do. bklynpotter--you should get a pet. they make great blanket warmers! My cat spoons under the blanket with me til i fall asleep. i'd guess she's at least 5-10 degrees hotter than me, and fluffy. It's awesome.
