the bodega on the corner of prospect and underhill pisses me off, because they rarely have anything. when i first moved in, i was so excited to have one on the corner, but alas they didnt have an ATM (up until i just noticed yesterday, that they apparently got one), they have no brand condoms ("family planning center" brand, on this sketchy big piece of yellow paper where they pull off individually. i wouldnt touch them with a 10 foot poll, but someone has cause everytime i go the number of them on that piece of paper decreases!) , they dont have any ice cream really... they only have bud, no good beer. no cigs half of the time, and they effin close at 9????? makes me so mad. useless corner store!

Yep, something's not right with that bodega at Underhill and Prospect. They don't have ANYthing. It's been that way for a few years and more than one person has commented on it here. How/why do they stay in business?

do you know why they didn't have one?

i'm getting this second hand, but it's a great story:

    they used to have one.

one night, someone bashed a hole through the exterior wall and stole it.

(you can see the patch in the wall on the propect side.)

Like most bodegas that used to thrive in the neighborhood. This one is probably running numbers and selling drugs. It was common. Maybe they are one of the survivors? The bodega could be a front.

Actually, I see him getting a ton of business from kids who buy candy and drinks from him before and after school. I doubt he is a front for drugs because he closes so early. usually the fronts are open either very late or 24/7. If he's running numbers , well good for him. It's hard for any store owner to make cash with all the taxes and lack of business now or days. Did anyone ever think of just asking him for certain things? He's a nice enough guy maybe he'll oblige.

i don't know anything about this other than that i'm inviting ProspectHeightsGirl to my next party, but let's keep the online speculation to a minimum with law enforcement types lurking around. dry snitching is snitching too.

I would give the law enforcement more credit. If they thought this was all going on, then they would have known before us. It has been going on and was never really a secret.

There aren't any real snitches in here and I thought you would have known better.

I'm curious, how do you know it's going on?

fair enough, breukelen, but if it's being discussed online, then it could become embarrassing to johnny law and spur action. all i'm saying is let's not throw accusations around in public.

I am not saying this particular bodega is doing it, but there were plenty that used to and i'm sure there are some that still do.

Ask you neighbors that have been around for a while and they will tell you.

It seemed like a few posters were implying that he was up to no good.

They are harder to come by than weed. You are better off soliciting one from the people at your local bar.

a lot of places won't sell them to white people (or at least people they don't know). the going rate is still 50 cents per, but i know at least one place that charges 75 cents.

I walked up and down Washington and Underhill on Sunday looking for a loosie and came up empty. Must have tried 6 or 7 corner stores. Finally succumbed to the cigarette urge and the embarrasment/rejection and just bought an entire pack. :-#

Can someone lobby for individual cigarettes to be sold? Bodegas sell single beers out of 6-packs for God's sake. I bet a study would show a decrease in how much people smoke if loosies were legal. Damn Tobacco giants.

considering individual cigars are legal, i'm guessing the reason cigarettes pose a problem is because the government only gets tax money on the pack, not on the mark-up bodegas make when they break it up and sell it for what amounts to double the profit.

    but newports are disgusting anyway.

Bloomberg is the best, isn't he? I love how that guy screws the little people and they still vote for him. I want him to run for President and screw all of us even more. Hell, tax toilet paper because we need it.

I say tax toilet paper, kleenex, and looseleaf paper by the sheet! There is some serious money to be made there.

Reminds me of the phrase from the sci-fi classic: TANSTAAFL.

    Name the book (without Googling).
