that if someone were really adamant about getting rid of guest postings
all they need to do is create a pseudo 'anonymous guest' alter ego
and annoy the living crap out of everyone?

    is that what you're saying O:) :-'
The infamous Anonymous Guest was ONLY posting anonymously. What you're proposing is sock puppetry, which might be more of a way for the user involved to get a timeout or get banned.

If I remember right, AG's IP was blocked as well.

    what she said
and the guest postings would have to annoy the crap out of DailyHeights, since it's his decision as owner of the board
[annoying the rest of us just gets all of us annoyed. fun!]

Yes, the PH ban was sort of a test case after a particularly annoying poster ran lots of people off. At the time, it seemed like posters on other boards didn't want it, so it was PH-only.

I disagree with Kensingtonmom's suggestion in the other thread that the handles used by posters here are, in their own way, anonymous. I have a handles that I use very consistently on pretty much every site except this one (where Emily was, due to the board's youth, still available!). I definitely feel that I have a strong reputation stake in that name.

I suspect that if I went all over this board or even, say, Brownstoner or Park Slope Parents or someplace else familiar to users of this board, annoying people and calling myself Kensingtonmom, she would find that she has a real stake in that "name" as well. Just because it's not your legal name doesn't mean you're fully anonymous.

you know there's plenty of anonymous dns services
so you wouldn't be able to track any postings by IP address

You know what? If anyone is considering what Quijibo is "just sayin'" -- please don't. If you want user registration, ask DH for it, but don't purposefully create a huge mess for the mods (who all volunteer our time to try to keep the site running in an orderly fashion) to deal with.

FWIW, there's another reason to ban guest posting. It seems that the spammers have once again found a way to circumvent our spam-blocking software. I've had to delete 3 different spam posts selling mp3s with a bunch of Chinese or Japanese characters (I deleted it before I could look closely enough to distinguish). Requiring registration would eliminate that.

EDIT: I just deleted another one and those characters were Chinese.

ok. the answer is if you wish to post anonymously...
you must provide a valid email address in order for your comments to be posted
it reframes the anonymous debate - since the user has provided a valid email address
--just how much beligerence are they willing to risk?

    self policing
    social science....
