New Years Eve

Hello friends,
I've been discussing New Years with some other brooklyn friends. This is all of our first new years in NYC. We don't want to brave the manhattan insanity or pay outrageous amounts of money to go out.
Any suggestions for bars with no or low cover in PH, PS or brooklyn generally where there might be a fun and unpretensious atmosphere? any ideas would be appreciated.

    Subject: Fireworks

Well, not sure of the bar thing, but locally I'll be trying to catch some fireworks at the park. The kid in me must be appeased!

I reckon I'll have some people round and then wander over to the fireworks. Maybe drop into Soda afterwards. But at my place, I get to choose the music and the drinks are cheaper.

word. I'm thinking of hosting a small dinner party and then wandering over to Soda for the dancing and boozin'.

This is what we usually do. I always feel like it'll be a failure, but then people show and have a good time... I guess it shows that I'm not the only one craving low-key gatherings.

I called the Chocolate Monkey on flatbush and they are having a party but were a bit vague on the details. Anyone have an inside scoop?

I went to the fireworks last year and it was awesome. They also had live music which was a nice too.

Cafe Steinhoff on my corner is having a beach party on new years; no cover, and an entire beach-themed party if you feel like being somewhere warm on new years....

Southpaw. 50bux. Close to home, and I've heard it's a great party. I've never been and am looking forward to it.... look it up, although, I got my tix a month ago, and I'm sure it's sold out by now.

has anyone done this any other year? i'm flying solo this new year's eve and unlike last year, don't want to treat myself to ordering in a nice meal and getting food posioning. gak. ergo, looking for close-to-home ideas that are low key.

My old neighbor went to Steinhoff alone last year during the blackout and met her now-fiancee there. Its a great bar to hit alone.

If my friends piss me off and i dont feel like leaving my block I might just end up there.

I know I am doing this at the last minute, but I am looking for somewhere my husband and I could go for a nice relaxed New Years Eve Dinner. I thought about Cheryl's since we live so close, but decided against it. Any suggestions as I really do not feel like going into Manhattan.

I had dinner at Beast last year on NYE - it was really pleasant.

if you want fancier, give the Garden Cafe a call.

Ripple (Washington & St. Johns) will have DJs spinning (and/or whatever you call what iPod DJs do) and free entry all night.

OK, so I'm 95% sure I'm going to be at Steinhoff's beach party to ring in the new years, i think its going to be awesome. Beach attire is encouraged!

If anyone decides to come, say hi! Here's my pic from the Festivus party:

I sorta wish I was spending it alone. I feel like being really low-key. Instead, I'm going to a glamorous party in Manhattan with 6 friends. I barely have the energy - or the cash.

Well unless you already paid, you can skip the madness and come to steinhoff for free!

My best new years to date was a neighbors' loft party across the street from mine where there were a bunch of cool people and i stumbled home drunk at 4am across the street to my bed. And didnt spend a dime. :)

My hub and I stayed home, ate Chinese, watched Six Feet Under (only season 2), and then walked to the park for the fireworks. They were wonderful!
I know that sounds incredibly boring, but we're never home at night together, so boring suited just fine!

What I like about NY in NY:

    * lots of happy friendly people but comparatively few drunk people on the streets compared with big cities in other Western democracies
    * no kids with DIY fireworks on every block (and thus fewer burning buildings, missing fingers, eyes, hearing loss, etc.)

What I miss: dancing outside until the midsummer dawn and lazing around the bbq or beach party the next day.

Hmm...i always see do-it-yourself fireworks every year, more on fourth of july though. Luckily I've never been hit by any.
