I'm also interested in spinning recommendations. I messed up my hamstring so badly that I haven't been able to run in two months, and I'm getting fatter by the day.

Take Gwen's class at the Park Slope Y. The other trainers aren't as good. Gwen will kick your ass in the best way possible. I used her classes last winter as my off season triathlon bike training and by spring, I was in awesome cycling shape.

    Thanks everyone.

jayce, do you have to be a member to take classes at the Y? Or is there a link to classes?

I'm definitely not going back to Crunch. Being a former member of the gym, I joined it for the spinning and unfortunately, their spin classes are a joke being taught by overweight instructors. Not sure what they were thinking.

I believe you do. But they are super affordable (like under $50 for a single person per month) and worth every penny. Like I said, Gwen rocks.

There's a Pilates/Spinning place called Indigo on 8th Ave near 12th Street. I don't know if they are any good, but I'm pretty sure you can pay per class

Embora on Washington and Fulton. $13 per class and the best part is the class is late (8pm).

LOL, I was a member of Crunch for a while and I thought that about the spinning classes too! One instructor in particular was so overweight and red-faced that I was genuinely concerned he might have a heart attack during the class. How is it possible to be a spinning instructor and yet still be overweight??

I don't know why people don't like the Slope Health & Fitness, but they now have the option of buying fitness classes individually without having to buy a membership to the club.

Speak to Renee Daniels down there. She is their group fitness director.

The Slope H&F is a hidden treasure. Those who like it love it and those who don't have probably not tried the place. The best, hands down!

I think the Slope Health & Fitness is great for their classes. I also just heard that they are expanding, and will be able to offer more classes.
    FANTASTIC!!!!

i'm a 30 second walk away from slope health and fitness =) I'll check them out. I hope they don't have blobby instructors like Crunch. I want someone who will challenge me and kick butt.

There's also the Park Slope Fitness collective on 11th street and 7th avenue. There's not a gym - they offer personal training and have an ecletic mix of classes I've been meaning to try. 50% discount on the first class too!

The instructors are really sweet and not blobby. Talk to their group fitness director Renee, she's really great.

The instructors are really sweet and not blobby. Talk to their group fitness director Renee, she's really great.I did my research and i'm going to go with the Y. For what it's worth here's what I found:

    1) Crunch - No, unless you want to be taught by a non pro. Period. Tried and tested.

    2) Slope Health and Fitness - because of proximity, this was my first choice, but friends and colleagues who live in the neighborhood have all left that gym for a variety of reasons and recommend I stay away. I doubt that over 10 people from various fitness backgrounds could all be wrong.

    3) Park Slope Y - So far so good =)

And garfield girl, i hate to break it to you, but promoting this gym in every possible fitness related blog using various usernames is not the best way to do PR for any facility. There is a pretty obvious difference between promotion and opinion. Especially from a gym which has received scathing reviews both online and by former members.

Slope Health & Fitness are clearly absolutely desperate for new members. They should give away some free memberships.

I would highly reccommend Yee's Hung -Ga. Its kung fu, not kickboxing, but still a great workout. And you'll learn self defense (which is just as important!!) I've been taking class at the chinatown branch for a few years now, and I love it! anyway, it's up around 20th st and 7th ave.

Based on your experiences, what would you guys recommend for a good full-body workout fo r someone who's body type is even i.e. i tone up evenly when i do any aerobic activity> something I can do 2-3 times a week to tone up, get some exercise in and feel good. I'm not looking to lose weight, just to stay fit ( i like chocolate cake ..a LOT) and I would rather take one class that does the job that go to a gym and do multiple body specific workouts.Kickboxing/ Pilates / Spinning etc?

Sorry my friend, no desperation here. We have been making some changes over the past year; some people can appreciate what we do and some can't. That's life and business. People cancel gym memberships all the time for various reasons, it doesn't mean we are in trouble. You should form your own opinions based on first hand experience.

ccolhandluke, i hope you realize that everyone in this forum now knows that you are the General Manager of Slope Fitness and Health.

Your curtness, poor attitude, endless shilling and overall pushiness (i am sure you are garfield girl as well.) isn't going to get you anywhere. I find it amusing that you have stooped so low to defend your establishment. If it's changing for the better, so be it. But don't take it out on posters in this forum. We are allowed to express our opinions freely and if you don't like it, perhaps you should abstain from reading or posting on this site.

I wish the administrator of this site would step in and remove this shiller.

I went by the place on 14th st and 5th Avenue. I did not visit a class. Has anyone done so?

Unfortunately, they only have monthly fees. I'm looking for cardio kickboxing classes that I can pay for by the class! I did join the Y. Why don't they have kickboxing at the YMCA? Why? Why?

If you don't mind the trek to BedSty, there is a fellow called Josh that I take private kickboxing lessons from. He is AMAZING! He also teaches Renegade JKD (the kind of martial arts that Bruce Lee did - and I think came up with in large part). It's totally fun and totally hard. I walk/hobble out of there with everything plastered in sweat and looking forward to the next week. His email is [email hidden]. He charges $20/hour.

I happen to have picked up a flyer from the above suggested Park Slope Fitness Collective this morning and they have exactly what I was looking for.

Coincidentally (perhaps), they have two classes listed called "Kickboxing w. Josh". Do you think that this is the same Josh? I don't mind treking to Bed Sty. I will travel for a good teacher.

The classes are Monday and Wednesday from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm . $15 per class or you can buy a group of classes.

it's not the same Josh. He works as a chef at night and teaches private classes during the day. My husband and I both go to him and really like him a lot (my husband found him on Craigslist a couple of months ago.) I think when the weather gets better, he'll start doing more group stuff in Fort Greene Park but in the meantime, his apartment is fine and frankly, a good place to learn the foundations.
