Burrito Bar to Open on 9/15

Spoke briefly with one of the workers at the new Burrito Bar and Kitchen and they said that the restaurant will be opening this Thursday, Sept. 15th. I know that everyone on dailyheights has already trashed this place but I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I will too, while I am in the minority and admittedly have bad taste, I think the sign is funny is childish sort of way, its like one of those pop up books.

It looks fine to me, I'm excited about it as well.

As long as there is a place where I can get a good burrito or enchilada on this side of Flatbush, and doesn't give me a hard time about delivering, I'll be happy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but NOT allowing myself to get overly excited.

Does the new "Take Out Smoothies" sign interest anyone?

There are tons of juice bars in the neighborhood... but I haven't seen smoothies...

I'm ready and willing to give them a chance. But probably not this week, unfortunately. I'm having dinner on Thurs w/ a friend I haven't seen in a while, and I'm not sure I want him to be a guinea pig.

As general rule I let new restaurants "get their legs" before I stop in.

I, too, was intrigued by the take-out Smoothies sign I saw the other day. Smoothies, like Burritos, are delicious. Ugly signs notwithstanding, I will definitely be sampling the selection from the place, unless, of course, it is too expensive.

In response to the comment about getting a good burrito this side of flatbush, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed a recent burrito I had from Yummy Taco. I know that the Yummy Taco staff aren't exactly authentic Mexican and the place doesn't look like the cleanest joint in the world, but that was one damn good burrito. For 4.95, it was two meals worth of food, and they brought it to my apartment in about twenty minutes.

Incidentally, "One Damn Good Burrito" was the name of a self-recorded, self-produced, self-distributed EP I made while I was in college.

I'll be back in town by Thursday, and will definitely be trying the place, despite my low expectations.

My vote is for Happy Fresh Tex-Mex: cheap, plentiful, good, and time-warp fast; owned and operated by Asian-Americans. I love that. In the same vein, there was also a Latino-run pizza joint across from Key Food on Seventh, but it may have changed owners with the refurb.

Separately, big ups for Yummy Taco's marketing savvy; the name undoubtedly tested better than "Yucky Taco."

Hibiscus Cafe' and Flowers on Vanderbilt between Dean/Bergen has fruit smoothies, and has had them for a long time, like *at least* 2 years. I swear, it seems like not a single one of the people reading this, or posting on it at least, ever walks down our end of Vanderbilt. You should try it, and experience all of Prospect Heights, not just the part bordering Park Slope! We don't bite.

I also saw the sign today, and it wasn't as bad as I was led to believe by the posts here, fugly, yeah, ok, but in a hippie/kiddie sort of "look at me" way, which is what signs are supposed to do. {former art director here, no I would NEVER do something like it, but, different strokes, etc...} and: We all looked! :P

No, One Damn Good Burrito is not still in stores, nor was it ever. It was more something that was forced upon my friends and family. To be honest, I'm not sure if a copy even exists anywhere anymore, although probably my dad has one stashed away. It's probably for the best, it would be awful embarassing if I ever become a famous anything, because, to be honest, it's terrible.

My roommate has taken to referring to Burrito Bar as "Happy Burrito" based on the sign. It creates a good deal of confusion around the apartment, as I usually think he's just referring to "Yummy Taco" and trying to make a joke of it.

I saw the Hibiscus cafe smoothie thing just Saturday when I walked by it. They seemed pretty expensive and the options seemed a little bit limited. How are they?

The smoothies are a little expensive, but really good. Sometimes I ahve a big one for dinner, especially when it's boiling hot out. Sorry for the rant above!

hibiscus smoothies are a bit on the high side (i think around $4.50 for a small, simple one and up to $6 or $7 for a large specialty), but they are very fresh and yummy. the people who own the place are great. they will whip up anything you want and can even make suggestions if you feel you are missing something from your diet (vitamins, protein, etc.). my favorite is the mandingo, which is seamoss, mango, banana, pineapple and pear. i also really like the grasshopper, which, while not a smoothie, is a blend of wheatgrass, orange juice, lemon juice and a one or two other items I can't remember. also, check out their vegan goodies

I have been to Hibiscus and didn't notice that they had smoothies. They are going to have to invest in a big ugly sign if they want my business.

Anyone know if the Flatbush Burrito Bar is related to the closed (but still standing) Burrito Bar on Church Street in Tribeca? If you want hippie/tacky, you should check the Tribeca one out before the exterior signage is ripped out and replaced.

They're not open yet. I stopped by to try it and the staff was there having some kind of pre-opening meeting. The actual opening is tomorrow.

My wife and I did score some $10 off coupons though. They're good from 10/1 through 10/31.

Ditto. Perhaps those of us with coupons should meet up for a special 10/1/05 $10 off dinner.

ETA: We also talked to a guy who told us that the restaurant was open for 14 years in its previous incarnation in Tribeca but lost its lease. That sounds promsing.

I've been very dubious about this place but I will admit that I was comforted to see that they had a sign recommending that those with strollers could use the ramp to enter. This suggested to me a) that they have some awareness of the neighborhood and b) that it can't be all that focused on alcohol if they're specifically inviting the stroller set (although arguably we need a drink more than the average guy).

So I've warmed slightly (and just slightly) to the idea of this place. I'll have to hang around tomorrow and see if I can score a coupon.

I watched the beginning this year. Truly a sight to behold. Then we went to Grimaldis, where some tourists waiting in line were **very** confused.

I participated in the race last January. Our team of five had the best damn two designers in the race. Those two guys conceived and built an exact replica of a C train. Fun and exhausting. And a winner.

Sorry to change the subject (back), but has anyone tried this place yet? I'm hoping to make it there sometime this week.
