Well, Alex isn't complaining about them--he just doesn't want to look at them. That's the great thing about FF extensions and Greasemonkey: you can make things the way you want without changing the page you're looking at.

I just killed the new "blogads" by downloading the adblock extension and adding *blogads* to the list. But I can't seem to kill the Goooooogle ones.

DaveB may know more.

Try Adblock and after that, try running your own damn free website.

pagead2.googlesyndication.com is the string you want to block, but seeing how it's imageless ads and unobtrusive, I tend to let those slide because like Andy said, it's free cause some poor working schmoo pays for it out his own pocket. It's the images, popups and flash I usually take exception to.

I finally just downloaded adblock today (because one of my other favorite boards crashed and is on involuntary MSN Groups hiatus/exile), so I'm kind of an adblock jag right now...it will probably wear off.

BTW, I can still see my own page. The only thing that seems fishy to me is sitemeter.

If you don't like ads, don't look at them. If a site has them, I rarely notice them...and never do I complain about them. Sites big and small require money to function. You must be looking for them to see them.

It is, of course, our God-given cyberright to block ads wherever we find them. But it seems more than a tad tacky to use Dailyheight's bandwidth to discuss how to undercut its undoubtedly small ad revenue when it's far closer to being a community service than a media behemoth.

We're only in the very early days of figuring out how to feed writers and editors on the Web. In a few days, the NYT will put a bunch of their stuff behind a subscription wall, and they're generally a belwether for other MSM.

Someday we may look back fondly on the days of free ad-supported Web content.

I don't mind these type of banner ads at all...they're easy enough to just ignore, and in fact, eeeevery once in a while, I see something I will actually click on. The only types of ads (as daveb noted above) that bug me are the flash/popup ads, particularly the ones that mask how to close them so you can't even read the site you're trying to get to. Those are worth trying to block. Unobtrusive banner ads that allow free content? Get over it.

I wonder if it might possible to move the big blogads column on the left to the right? it's pushing out the posts such that i have to scroll horizontally (alas, i do not have priveledges to change the screen resolution of my monitor at work).

Andy, does DH get paid just for having the ads appear there, or is it on a per-click basis? If it's the latter, I'm sure many of us would more more inclined to check some of them out.

GoogleAds are per-click, but they are pretty touchy about site-admins giving any sort of encouragement to users to click them.

Are the ads in the left column of the message board "GoogleAds"? The heading just says BlogAds.

The ones at the top of the page are the Google ads.

The ads to the left are BlogAds. They count page views and clicks, but I don't think they pay on a per-click basis.

The story is that DH got recruited to join the NYC Blogads Network which has been organized by Amy of Amy's New York Notebook, so there you go.

The monitor issue concerns me. I have a pretty small monitor too, but in Firefox, the pages load fine. ana.log, did you try refreshing the page? Sometimes that helps reset the table borders.

DH, I sometimes had problems with the page laying out too wide before the Blog Ads showed up. (Usually the main forum page, not the pages for individual topics.) I think it may be a phpBB/browser issue. I'm using FF; I wonder what ana.log is using.

You could also just edit you HOSTS.txt file if you are running windoze. I think the line you add is something like this:

127.0.0.1 ihate.ads.com

(or maybe even "127.0.0.1 *.ads.com")

The 127.0.0.1 is the loopback to your machine, so by setting ihate.ads.com to 127.0.0.1, it will kill the ad and also not waste the bandwidth of downloading the ad.

I'm not sure where you would do this on a linux box (/etc/resolv.conf?)...

IE at work, FF at home.

I have a modest proposal to deal with this. First, the ads are here because the site needs money, correct? Second, the site asks for donations to help keep it afloat on top of that.

Well, how about setting things up so if you become a contributor and donate funds towards the site, you get to see an adless site? Don't pay? Then you'll see the ads.

Or hey, if that doesn't fly. What about simply blocking ads for registered users? This thread was started by yet another anonymous "Guest"? Why all the debate and discussion over a comment made by someone who can't even regsiter and be non-anonymous.

Also, considering the occasional spam on all boards--such as here--by people offering property for rent or sale, perhaps have a paid ad listing area would not be a bad idea. This whole site is very localized and specific and I'm sure that anyone serious about renting or selling property would gladly pay a fee to list their place here.

I would imagine they would feel similarly about site participants conspiring to click them for the sole purpose of enriching the site.

hmm. well, who else is supposed to click them besides site participants? and do we think google is going to personally check in and find out?

i think its common enough that people say "support our sponsors and support our site by clicking the goodle ads" online. i run em on my site and take every opportunity to get $ from google as possible.

funny, i see no mention whatsoever about this in the Google AdSense Program Policies... got a link?

I want you to support our advertisers. Of course I do. Every publication/website does.

The problem is if you click ads that aren't relevant to you/don't interest you. The beauty of Google Adsense is that it pops up Ads they KNOW you will want to click (OK, I'm sick of seeing the real estate ads, but "old brooklyn photos" caught my eye, as did the ad for Clay Pot in Park Slope).

I haven't clicked those ads, just because I don't want to inflate my own click counts, and even if I did, they wouldn't give us credit for it.

90% of the ads on citynosie are for "old brooklyn photos" or "brooklyn real estate".

the ones for phentermine and tramadol, as well as free online gambling, generate the highest $, lol.

You can setup adwords to not display certain ads if you want.

I briefly had another blog that was getting ads related to painkiller drugs. I think they were paying more than $1 per click. Of course, we're talking 3 clicks a day
