I was going to show up around 7:30pm but not if it means sitting around talking to myself. That's what I do on Tuesday nights.

Hmm, is there enough light back there for lame-ass knitters like myself who have to see what they're doing? That could be an added incentive for me to blow off my freelance work tonight and come introduce myself...

Rest assured, I can knit, play games and drink beer all at the same time. I'm talented like that.

Hey guys, I think I, inadvertantly  skipped out on my tab last night! Oops. Did someone cover for me? Who do I owe money to?

Also, please tell me that Candissima did my fledgling real estate empire proud and kicked your asses in Brooklynopoly.
  • candicissima

Yeah about that ass kicking thing...I was doing okay until I was nearly bankrupted by ______ (Mrs. Carnivore. I missed her name I was late.). She was the Brooklyn Monopoly kingpin to end all kingpins.

you may want to swing by Soda today -- I don't think any of us were aware of your tab so I don't think anyone covered it.

Yeah, you could probably get away with it now! It's not like you just posted it all over the boards that they read or something...

D'oh. That's enough sass out of you, Candissima. I left you with a decent monopoly spread. Did you even try to get the fourth rail road off Mrs. Carnivore?

If it were some random crappy bar, I'd say see ya, but since it is the fabulous Soda in my own backyard, I of course will make good.

Sometime remind me to tell the story about the hotel in Slovenia. 8)

The marrieds had a monopoly on "most likely to be landed on" real estate where they built the equivalent of the Atlantic Yards Project, so the fact I didn't end up dead broke and totally morgaged was a miracle in itself.

I'll spare the longwinded sanctimony and simply say that I think it's a good idea to pay up. Toli and crew have been pretty good to our 'hood these last couple of years. No need to fuck them over.

have you guys ever seen the bartenders in there go after someone who walks in after stiffing them on a bar tab? a fantastic evening's entertainment, I tell you.

twice I've witnessed some hapless fool walk in after having walked out on a tab and not immediately fess up. it goes down something like this: the idiot walks in and sits down at the bar. the idiot then orders a beer and food. the bartender, knowing the person owes money, rips into the idiot and demands the money. the idiot pays and tries to pretend like they were going to pay all along. the bartender tells the idiot that they can't run a tab anymore, chastises the person loudly for trying to rip off the bar, and demands the tip for the previous balance. then, the bartender will quote the price for the current order and demand that the idiot pay right at that moment. the person will pay and eventually receive the beer. all of this is done loudly, so the entire bar can hear the 'conversation' over the jukebox. the idiot will sit there self-consciously for the rest of that day's visit. it's pretty awesome.

It would be a lot easier if they didn't automatically assume you want to run a tab. It's a bar. Stuff happens. People walk around. A lot of people probably forget or almost forget to pay their tab.
  • emily
    emily
Yeah, I can't really think of other places where they run cash tabs. Either you pay as you go and don't forget, or they keep your credit card and can charge it if you do.

Who knew you could even run a tab in this town, much less run out on one? Good stuff.

Enjoyed meeting everyone last night, and wanted to express my sincere apologies to anyone who was freaked out by the knitting. We come in peace, I swear.

I also remembered the thing about Monopoly, which is that the last quarter of every game is always a prolonged, painful slide of inevitability, with the haves grinding the have-nots into the dust...this is a game for children???

Next week, trivial pursuit? or simpsons clue?

I of course will have to go incognito so the Soda bar staff doesn't run me out with a pitchfork when I dare to show my face.

when y'all are up for a trouncing, I'll bring my cards & chips for poker. I'll have to be back into drinking-til-oblivion, though. I play best wasted.

hrm. I know they showed another one from the Breakin' era that was set in the south bronx and I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, though anthony has the soundtrack.
Beat Street perhaps? I've got that soundtrack too. Or maybe Rappin'? Though I dunno where that was set.
beat street! whoa -- the outfits in that are WHACK!

Wild Style is the movie in question. Also a killer soundtrack.

And what the hell happened to my little out-of-the-way neighborhood I had so carefully crafted before having to bolt? I believe it included the West Indian Day Parade, and two other such 'properties'.

Crushed by The Man and her $1400 rents. Sorry. Roti never stood a chance.
