Open House for Kids Improv Classes at The PIT
The Peoples Improv Theater (aka The PIT) has offered unparalleled improv, writing and elective classes to adults in New York City for over five years (they just celebrated their Five Year Anniversary), and now they are extending their programming to include introductory improv classes for teens ages 13-18, and kids ages 9-12. These 8-week classes will begin in January, and will soon expand to include intermediate and advanced improv classes as well.
To introduce the community to the program, The PIT will be hosting an open house for all interested kids and teen class students. The open house will take place on Saturday, January 12, from 10 am to noon. Students and their families will have an opportunity to visit The Peoples Improv Theater, where all classes will take place. The PIT's managing director Katie Goan and the Kids/Teen program coordinator and instructor will be there to answer any questions they have about the program. Students will also be able to participate in a sampling of the games and exercises offered in the new program.
All teen/kids classes will be held at The PIT Theater and will culminate in a professional graduation show. Students in the Teen Program will have the opportunity to audition for a new Teen Improv House Team that will perform weekly at The PIT.
The details are as follows:
Open House for Kids and Teen Program: Saturday January 12, 2008 from 10am - noon.
The Open House will take place at The PIT Theater, 154 W. 29th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10001.
Intro to Improvisation for Teens (ages 13-18) will take place every Monday from 4-7 PM for eight weeks starting January 21, 2008. This class utilizes theatre games, scene work and group exercises to teach teens the fundamentals of Improvisation. Students are offered an overview of different kinds of improvisation, giving them a toolbox of skills. With a focus on building an ensemble, students develop their teamwork and listening skills; learning to relax and react on stage while building a scene with depth of relationship, environment and character. They are able to explore and expand their creativity in a safe and respectful environment.
Intro to Improvisation for Kids (ages 9-12) will be held Saturday mornings from 9AM-12PM for eight weeks starting January 19, 2007– This class is about fun! The instructor will use theatre games and physical exercises to teach kids the basics of improvisation. Students will be encouraged to use their imaginations as they learn to create characters, build scenes and invent whole worlds without ever using a costume, prop or set piece. Students will also practice teamwork and listening skills to help them work as an ensemble and learn the discipline of performance.
The Peoples Improv Theater is dedicated to the instruction, performance, and development of original comedy.
