$10 for an accident report — Brooklynian

$10 for an accident report

allow me to relay a grievance:

two days ago i arrive at my car and see that a police accident report has been filled out and left under my wiper. i circle my car and can find no (new) damage. i call the fightin' 78th to get the scoop and I'm told that to get the report I need to bring a money order for $10 to the precinct. what gives? why? i told the nice lady that that was a racket and a scam I didn't wish to fall for. she insisted it wasn't a scam. would have been great if she agreed. now i'm damn curious what happened to my car, but not interested in shelling out any dough to find out.
lame.

  • this happened to me like 3 yrs ago in fort greene. had my car broken into and in order to get the police report had to fork over $10.

i guess cops these days don't count filling out police reports as part of their job description...no wonder they're known as PIGS.

sorry kwac. no offense. i guess the $10 is an administrative fee.

Come on, that's uncalled for. The cops working the street have absolutely no control over how much the city charges you for copies of accident reports. It's a ridiculous amount of money for a photocopy, I agree but there is nothing I can do to change that. Talk to Mr. Bloomberg. They took an accident report when something was stolen from you car? Normally it would just be a complaint report. Copies of complaint reports are even obtained from the precinct.

Trainsmoke, I would go down there and just ask to see a copy of the accident report so you can find out what happened. You're not actually asking to take a copy just to know what the hell happened. If no luck with the "always eager to please" civilians I would suggest asking to speak to the highway safety officer of community affairs officer.
  • i asked if she could just read it me, or if i went down there, if i could just read it. she said no. how does one get a hold of the highway safety officer or community affairs officer?

You could always try the telephone.
