I found a bicycle! (outside 473 st johns)

Coming home on Wednesday night, I found a bike fallen over on its side--splayed out on the sidewalk all vulnerable and eerie-like. It looked like it was locked to the iron gate in front of the building, but the lock wasn't securely fastened or perhaps even broken, and so it had toppled over somehow. Both pieces of the lock were resting nearby on the sidewalk.

At first (after scanning the area for potential bike owners and/or bandits) I simply leaned the bike back against the fence and tried to fashion the lock back on. But it wouldn't stick! Worried that it would fall over again and be swept up by the bikemongers who pilfered my front wheel (and my bell!) a few months ago, I carried the thing into my apartment where I'm now lusting over it and wishing it were mine mine mine.

But, since I know the pangs of bike loss are immense and that the logistical and financial burdens of replacing bicycles are also severely annoying, and since I am not myself a thief of any kind, I'd very much like to find this bike's owner and give it back!

I hung a sign in the lobby of my building and one on the fence (with flashy red ribbons even), but it's possible that you are not a resident of my building, but instead a tenant of a neighboring building who utilizes of our fence for locking purposes.

Please respond to identify your precious bike! (It's safe! Not stolen! Life is good!) I'm worried you will chalk it up as forever gone and buy a new one.

thanks and all best,
jb

  • Not my bike, but I sure hope that there wasn't much of a time lag between you're taking the bike and posting a sign. Hopefully you're also making sure that the signs stay in place and legible. Maybe if someone briefly thinks that his or her bike was stolen a friend will see the sign and report back.
  • It was just a few minutes max.
  • Subject: Lost bike has found its owner!

Wahoo! She was out of town, so it took a while, but the signs worked!!
  • Cool!! Glad that it worked.
  • Thanks again for saving my bike! As I was coming up the street, I said, "Uh, where's my bike??!?!?!?!" And then I saw your lovely note.

    Thanks so much!
