I thought Black Irish referred to the descendents of Spanish sailors shipwrecked off the Irish coast after losing a sea battle with the English in the 17th (?) century.

And it took this long for them to get curtains?

I joke with my husband (Irish all the way on both parents' sides) about the two kinds of Irish:

"Lace-Curtain Irish"
(Irish who dare to put on airs and put curtains in their window, aping the bourgeoisie)

and

"Pig-in-the-Parlor Irish"
(Muddy-shoed farm folk who can't adjust to 'civilized' life)

It's funny now, but back when those terms were actually used seriously, I don't think we would have been laughing...

I have to admit, I am guilty of nekkidness and insufficient curtainage, and as a non-skinny white girl, I'm keeping the stereotype alive. :oops: I have some filmy curtains that don't really hide jack, and it's more comfortable to lounge around with very little on, especially in the spring & summer. It's not that I don't have sympathy for the ppl across the street, I'm just too lazy to get more window dressing. And sometimes the Polish dudes that work in the bakery stare at me when I sit in the window smoking, which I don't really care for. I do put on something before doing that though. Then brats walk by and think it's a funny joke to yell, "Don't jump!" because I'm sitting on the windowsill.
