Good Tailor or Seamstress? — Brooklynian

Good Tailor or Seamstress?

I have a dress that needs serious alterations. While I've gone to the dry cleaner at the corner of Park Pl. and Vanderbilt for trouser hems, I don't have enough experience to know if they can do a sensitive job on an expensive item of clothing. And, it would be great if the person who did the alterations had a good eye for fitting to flatter (i.e. not just selecting the fastest, cheapest way to make the alterations).

Any names of tailors or seamstresses in PH and/or PS would be appreciated.

  • I've gone to the one on Washington between Sterling & St. John's before to have a dress taken in. They were great. I'd steer clear of Caree for anything other than a simple hem job. Trust your instinct on that one.
  • My cousin was married in September and the tailor she used in Manhattan who altered her dress made a mess of it. I searched this board and found the name of someone for her to try and she was soooo happy with the results.

  • The guy on Washington between St Johns Pl and Lincoln pl did a good job with my wife's bridesmaid dress. He works late hour to.
  • Thanks, everyone: sounds like the guy on Washington around St. Johns Pl. is the place to try. Carla's, from the above-mentioned thread, looks interesting, but perhaps only for new dresses, not alterations (did anyone see the July 2007 posting where she made a mess of a dress that she was to alter?)
