cat gift ideas

My friend adopted two cats from the aspca yesterday. I want to put together a little gift basket for her, but I don't know the first thing about cats. Any ideas? (BTW, she doesn't have anything but food and a litterbox yet.)

  • I'd start with a good brush, a couple of cat toys, some catnip and a pair of nail clippers. You might also consider some cat treats. If you wanted to go a little more expensive, a scratching post is a great gift and I've heard its good to get them aclimated to using the post when coming into new surroundings vs. trying to break them from scratching the furniture.
  • I agree with homeowner. My cats loved the little pole with the feathers on it and you can never go wrong with a laser light for the kitties.

Also our own "Patron Saint of Cats" caseopele's mom has a great web site with unique and pretty cat gifts. Maybe she can suggest some items for you.

*FYI - I have no financial gain from this but I would love to see people support those in our neighborhood who truly go above and beyond for the kitties.
  • if she doesn't already have other pets, i'd throw in one of those sticky roller jobbies for getting cat hair off of clothes. you cannot have too many of those.

for the cats, a laser pointer is nice, but the biggest hit at our house is something like this:

ours looks a little different. get the kind that you can replace the feather part on.
  • Best brush, I swear: Zoom Groom

    Best toy, I swear: CatDancer

Second best toy: Several (because they're just going to end up under the sofa) good ol' reliable fur mousies, the kind they usually have in a little bucket at the pet store cash register. I always pull out the plastic eyes and nose first to keep the girls from swallowing them.

If the cats are adults already, get 'em a nice package of catnip too. Younger cats don't really respond to it, though.
  • I second the Cat Dancer- cheapest toy out there and my cats go absolutely NUTS for it.
  • Amen, Papi Chulo was enthralled by it too!

Serious fun for cats and their owners.

Aww, thanks stacey! Though my mom would gladly tell you I'm no saint.

akm, I second apollonia666's recommendation for those little fur mousies. All of my cats (fosters included) are nuts about them. Also, my mom gave me one of these cat scratchers a few months ago and it's gotten a lot of use.

Mumps and Grumps went nuts over the pawbreakers too.

If you're interested in anything I'll be seeing my mom tomorrow night and I could pick something up for you.
  • THanks!! I got the cat dancer and zoom groom and a few other things. The cats loved them!
