vacant eyesore
On my block - 6th ave. bet 10th-11th st. there is a vacant house that's been there at least as long as I have been there (17yrs.). I understand the taxes are paid on the property but there are massive holes in the roof and this poses a hazard - It's probably eroding the adjacent buidlings firewall. Last year someone walking on the rooftop - drunk - fell through the roof into the vacant buidling. Luckily he had a cell phone and was able to call for help. I think the city can impose fines for have the buidling
roof exposed but what I am wondering is can the city condemn the building and have it torn down. I know people have tried without sucess to purchase the property - the story is that the original owner -now deceased, left money in his will to pay the taxes in perpetuity but also instructed his heirs never to sell- some kind of revenge thing with a neighbor - who of course is no longer there.
It seems ridiculous that this building can stay there forever. Any ideas?

This seems a little far fetched. Maybe someone DOES live there - but they only come out at night when the sunlight can't kill them and there is ample young virgin blood to suck. :twisted: -

There's a corner building (8 units) on 6th Street and PPW that's been vacant for at least 10 years. Every now and then a kerosene lamp is spotted inside. The fire dept. and police dept. check it once in a while then forget it. It's a beautiful, stately building that was left to crumble. There is frequently graffiti on it.

I just looked that building the other day, I have a friend on that block and he told me about it. It's a corner limestone mansion on a park block! Just empty and rotting. makes me a little ill...
There's also the admittedly beat and boarded up building on Underhill, corner of Bergen, the owner has it filled with crap and garbage, and word in the 'hood is that it's "boobytrapped" inside to deter any thieves. -
Subject: Another Building
There's a building next to the Mojo Cafe on the north side of 3rd Street at 7th Avenue that's been vacant for years. Also the large building on the SE corner of 7th Avenue and 2nd Street. Some sort of litigation or kookiness in involved in each. -
Anyone have info on how to buy these or find out whats actually going on with them?

I lived on 10th St bet. 5th & 6th for 15 years and actually spoke with the owner of the building on 6th AVe you refer to. I got her name from the city records, and got her phone number from the directory assistance. She lived on the Upper East Side. When I spoke with her, I suggested she might want to fix up the building or sell it. She became very hostile, complained about all of the tickets that she kept getting from Sanitation and she had to hire attorneys to fight false deeds filed with the city by people trying to steal her property. In short, a complete whacko. There ought to be a law........

Regarding the building on 7th Avenue and 2nd Street: the ground floor used to be a bar called the Landmark Tavern. They had live music, and the owner and her two daughters would hand each patron a drum or something else to bang on so that the band would have a percussion section. There were no taps or anything like that, but the owner would sell bottles of beer that she had just purchased from the grocery store next door. The place was filled with old toys and other knicknacks (the bathroom was filthy, though).
I vividly remember some guy complaining about having to pay the "high price" of $3 for a bottle of beer. How times change. -

That's probably true, and of course it is her place and her right to sell or not as she sees fit. That being said, it is annoying the place just sits there like a gigantic dumpster. -
Speaking about abandoned buildings.... does anyone know what is up with the place on Garfield between 6th and 7th? They put cinder blocks in the windows for some reason (I'm guessing either for security or structural integrity or a combination of the two). The block otherwise is beautiful. I can't believe some developer doesn't scoop it up and turn it into condos.

I lived on Berkeley for 3 years when I first moved to Brooklyn, and this building had a terrible fire during that time, must be about...7 or 8 years ago. I can't believe it's still in disrepair. -
I also live on Berkeley and we've reported the vacant building a number of times (for rats, trash in the yard, etc.) and the city has cited the owner a number of times.
As I understand it, he refuses to sell despite a number of large offers because he wants to keep the property to spite someone else in the family (so our neighbors tell us).
He lets the citations pile up, but that's about it. The city also keeps online records on the Dept of Buildings website. -

This building is owned by Carlos Hernandez of Sunstar Realty - 291 5th Avenue. It has been written up in the NYTimes back in 1998, I believe. I used to rent a home from this man.... he never repaired anything on my building, let alone ever set foot in it.
No litigation going on here... just laziness.
