Ripped off @ Franny's, wtf.
Subject: Ripped off @ Franny's, wtf.
Earlier this week we went to Franny's and ordered the pizza with mozzarella and tomato....Just to get a pizza with sauce and a "dusting" of pecorino or parmesan......As you all know these aren't cheap pizzas. We told our waiter, but she swore that the mozzarella was there somewhere, although clearly there wasn't any of those big white spots buffalo mozzarella leaves when melted....
....We didn't feel like arguing the characteristics of melted cheese, so we paid and left.
Next time, we'll just go to Amorina.
So pizza lovers, just a heads up if you go to Franny's...

I like Amorina better, Franny's a bit stuck up for their Pizza's. If i want some extra onions on my Slice its a big deal and the onions are sliced so thin that they look like as id the were cut by a diamond edge slicer. Amorina for your buck Franny's for the name.

the pasta at franny's is where it's at. ignore the pizza.
-
I know it may seem trivial, and has nothing to do with the food whatsoever, but I can't past the fact that Franny's is on Flatbush.

It is trivial. I felt the same way until I went there, sat at the bar, ordered excellent pizza and pasta, and didn't hear the cacophony of Flatbush one bit. PH folk are lucky that it's so close—and if we want to spend a little less and have some great pizza, we can go to Amorina. -

I should note that I have indeed been there, and I my thought was that it was "okay". The pizza was tasty, but the atmosphere (which I mean as inside and out) was just "eh" to me. The staff was passive, the space was cramped, and when I stepped outside, I was on Flatbush.I know it may seem trivial, and has nothing to do with the food whatsoever, but I can't past the fact that Franny's is on Flatbush.

It's obviously popular, as I've only ever been able to get a table once (without a 45+ minute wait/room at the bar to wait) in the few times that I've randomly tried to pop in.
Glad it's there, but I've never really been "successful" there. -
At places like Franny's, Freeman's, Tailor, The Randolph, Balthazar, Lure etc etc, is better to sit at the bar. At least if you have a decent bartender he will give you attention if not an unforgettable meal for good or bad reasons. Sitting at a table all you are going to get from your waiter is: are you ready to order? What would you like to drink? Tap or Bottled water? Dessert and they drop the check, to me those are not food experiences, we might as well be at Mcdonald's or White Castle. It is good to seat at tables when you have a party of 4 or more, good to seat at table where you are an actual regular and the whole staff knows you including the chef and they come out to greet you, they send you an Amuse Bouche and more or less they send out their best things on menu. Other than that, just like the bars on our avenue, they are here to make money and do as many covers as possible, so don't be surprised if you go to a bar on Vandy and be treated like a customer because all you are in most of these places is a cover, 4 drinks and behind you there are more people who won't complain and you will be just another number at the end of the night.
Que lastima !!

at this point, with the write-ups, it does appear to be more of a destination place than a neighborhood place. i'm not surprised the quality has declined.
haven't stepped foot in there in about two years. tried on a Sunday night when the rest of hood was empty, and got turned away from a table about two hours before closing, and rudely.
the pizza's fine, but it ain't New Haven. Amorina will more than take care of my gourmet pizza cravings around here, and for cheaper. -
Ever since they got 3 stars in the NY Times it's been a madhouse. Going early doesn't help because it's kids hour (unless, that is, you have kids!). Good pizza though.
Try Toby's Public House on 21st St & 6th Av. Just as good brick-oven pizza, less crowded, & $3 Buds! -

I call frannie's the home of the $30 slice. Ate there once with my hubby. We each had a pizza, a drink. It cost $60 and we left more hungry than when I get a fresh eggplant slice at the pizza place up the street. -
I like sitting at the bar at franny's, enjoying some prosecco, and eating the pasta. pay attention people: this pasta rivals batali.

I've been there at least three times and have come away each time amazed.
Amazed at how a pizza can be undercooked AND burnt at the same time. -

look. I agree with you on the pizza. stop getting it!

as a non-aside yet not directed at you, I think it's so weird that people keep trying to eat pizza they don't like. this place has a menu that is 3/4 non-pizza. -

That is hilarious! I've only eaten there once and I had the undercooked burnt pizza. I thought it was just my bad luck - but obviously not!

If Franny's doesn't know how to make pizza, they should take it off the menu. -

many folks I know love their pizza. I don't like it. I don't argue: I eat the awesome pasta. not kidding, their pasta is amazing. they also make amazing starters. last time I was there some of the starters were a bit smaller than normal (actually, that was last time I was there with a group - I sometimes just eat a bowl of pasta on my own at the bar) which is obnoxious. point being, I think their non-pizza food is far better than their pizza and I haven't ordered their pizza in well well over a year (maybe two - I'm memory impaired). -
I lUUUURVE Franny's. I used to be a regular (and therefore regularly broke). But I stopped going for a while. I had a bad experience with an unpleasant hostess on my birthday. While the bar staff recognized this, and went far above and beyond to compensate, getting a table just wasn't going to happen. I wanted pizza and had to settle for Thai that night. and I just haven't been back. I'll be back over the summer though, I'm dying for a slice. Hopefully they'll let me in despite my ill-favored look.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but if pizza is going to be in the name of your restaurant (look at the clever use of pizza and wine in the apostrophe in their logo at http://www.frannysbrooklyn.com/) then maybe you might want to make sure your pizza is excellent or edible. -

That's a big Neapolitan thing. It's the style: puffy outer crust charred with the taste of the wood-burning oven and a middle that's so thin the milk that leaks from the melty mozzarella makes it a little soggy. I really dig it, but I can see how others might not.

Looked at Franny's menu and the prices don't seem that bad, but my quesiton is this: how big are the pies?

A pie is meant for one person. The crust is light and it's not super-laden with cheese. I'm usually satisfied if I share an appetizer with someone and then we have a pie each. I think what boosts the tab is the wine by the glass or the beer-- there don't seem to be any low-end options. So yeah, if you get a $9 beverage, an $8 appetizer, a $15 pie, plus a $7 tip, it will run you more than you would expect to spend at most neighborhood joints. But IMO, it's worth it. -

Personally, I think you're better off getting a few of the terrific appetizers and sharing a pie than getting a pie each and only getting one appetizer.
Or go for one of the pastas. They're amazing every time.
