Ruby Szechuan, Hunan, Cantonese Delicious Chinese Food

Ruby's next to the Copy Shop? A good rule of thumb is any Chinese place that's open past 11:30pm outside of any of the Chinatowns, has or used to have bullet proof glass, posts pictures of fried chicken wings in their windows, has bad to mediocre food. Ruby's is good for the munchies when everyone else is closed. Ie It's not bad for what it is.

I'll have to check it out, but it will be hard to beat the Grand Sichuan International in Chelsea (the others aren't as good).

Having been to both, Szechuan Gourmet blows Grand Sichuan out of the water. Best Chinese food I've had in New York by a wide margin. -
Going to Gourmet Szechuan tonight, can´t wait to try the spicy sesame noodles!
-
Will let you know whow it at went down tonight, have not eaten lunch, just waiting to pig out tonight!
I wish they had a Szechuan black flower pepper foundue, is there any place in the city that has it? -
So just came back from Szechuan Gourmet. Got there at around 6:30 pm, it was crowded but not to the point where i could not get a table for two, the wait was less than 5 minutes. We were seated next to an older couple who had their Bruni review with them and basically ordered what he did. I do not eat pork, so decided to go for the Spicy Sesame Noodles, Spicy Cucumber Salad and the Fish Fillet with cabbage in Chilli sauce, the fish had a warning with 4 peepers on the side meaning that it was spicy, i was thrilled about it. The Sesame noodles came and to our surprise the older couple had ordered the same thing, the noodles were cooked to perfection but was a bit disappointed when the spiciness did not really come through the palate as i had imagined, but it was still a good dish and very well balanced with the sesame. Next came our Cucumber salad, oh my fucking god, i am cucumber freak and these were so crunchy, the spicy garlic sauce was heavenly and we devoured those in bout 3 minutes, we looked at each other and i really wanted to pick the plate and drink the rest of the sauce but i am not such a savage when at a restaurant and sober. The Fish fillet came and of course the people next to us had the same, just the sight of the plate delighted me.Chunks of white fish with red pepper on top a garlic chilli sauce and best of all the cabbage in the bottom was so crunchy and it was just a surprise. I dug into it, eating it like a mad man, while the couple netx to us was not doing so well with the spicy sauce and peppers. Even though the dish was perfect, i was not happy about the level of spiciness again, it was spicy but not like i was expecting it. Still was yummy one of the best meals i have had this year. The bill including tips and 2 dishes that i ordered to go cost 55 bucks. Not bad, by the time we left there were at least 30 people waiting, i recommend going before 7pm.
Can´t wait to go back there for lunch since i will be working 10 blocks away from there. -
About to make myself a spicy cucumber salad from the spicy garlic sauce in the fish fillet i have left over...
Anyone else been? -
Just want to chime in on the Szechuan Gourmet. I've been there numerous times. Love the prawns with shredded pork. Hot and spicy dumplings. Hot and spicy fish filet. And the more exotic fare such as pork belly is good too.
I was introduced to this place by a Chinese friend. The prices are reasonable. Try the Tsingtao beer while waiting for your order. Take your out of town friends here to impress them! Take home some stuff too for next day, you won't regret it!
It is a good idea to have early dinner here. Lunchtime can be packed. 8) -
You are making me hungry, just picked up a half a chix, rice and beans from Castillo de Jagua!

Stir Fried Intestines* with chili & snake beans and Braised Sea Cucumber? They ain´t messing around. -
I have been pigging out in the last couple of days since i went on a booze bender on the weekend and now i feel guilty about it. So no booze for the next couple of weeks , so i have been eating like a Mid westerner 400 pounder after a trek to Walmart. Been cooking up a storm in the apartment,i had some Fish Fillet in the chilli sauce left, so cooked me up a good old pot full of rice , i made a sofrito from scratch, onions, tomato, green peppers, olives and even diced a quarter of a potato. Threw in some curry powder and a pinch of Safran and heated up the cabbage and chilli sauce over a slow fire. 20 minutes later rice was ready, made a cherry tomato, Arugula, cucumber salad with olive oil and Balsamic vinegar a glass of Chianti, the last one for a while or so i hope. And it was a perfect home cooked meal. Anyhow, i think i will try and make Szechuan Gourmet once a week from now on. Let us know what your experience is like.
