well, when you are evacuating a zillion people i imagine there is going to be a long wait.
my heart goes out to those folks. why can't Gustav find it way to Texas, instead? i hear Crawford is a good place to start... -
the only good thing about this is that the RNC is cancelled/postponed
I really feel for NO people. Many don't want to leave this time due to what happened last time. Poor people just starting to barely come back. SMH. -

they just called the mandatory evacuation so I'm sure it's hell right now...we learned our lesson after Katrina that you should leave at least 24 hours prior to the actual evacuation if you want to get out of the city with any reasonable amount of time. During katrina we left only about 9 hours prior to the mandatory evacuation and it was absolute hell.
Hopefully this time the gas stations actually have fuel. And maybe there will be some govt help for all the cars that break down/overheat. I'm hoping the govt learned something from the absolutely deplorable evacuation "effort" of Katrina, but somehow I'm doubting it. -
So far right Repugs were praying for rain "of biblical proportions" to come during Obama's speech at the DNC, and now Hurricane Gustave threatens the RNC.
I certainly hope things turn out ok for the people of New Orleans, but the timing of this couldn't be any more ironic.

(from the good folks that did a post-Katrina organizing site)
fingers crossed that there is less need than 3 years ago...
They are asking for help, doing stuff like updating the rest of the Katrina pages and building a kickass Goggle Map, so if you are skilled and so-inclined, go to the ning site and volunteer
