  • Suzie,

Here is the link for the percolator I brought this past weekend. If you don't like this one, google "percolator stovetop". See what comes up. I love this one. Maybe you have a sporting goods store near you. This store caters to campers, hunters, etc.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry if I broke the conversation up. I did not even read through everything because I'm a little pressed for time. Can't wait to read all I've missed.

Guzzo here wrote: "Times were rough but my Mother & Father dug up enough money at Christmas and bought me a little toy drum and a set of wooden soldiers. They told me I played with them for about 10 minutes and then went to the cabinets for the pots & pans and clothespins."

Nice to meet you, Warren. I remember the pots and pans days too on New Years Eve. That was so fun! My mom and I had a good laugh! She said to tell you it was after that that we graduated to fireworks!!! And, boy, was that awesome on 21st street! My block...
Mom used to let my kids open the cabinets and take all the canned goods out, and they used to just stack them, knock them down, then re-stack them for hours, and it cost nothing but an occassional mess.

Were you at the reunion? ..and sorry if I missed it in the blog if you mentioned it, but where did you grow up?
    Festina
Hi Festina, nice to meet you too. No I was not at the reunion. Actually I am an "Outsider". I grew up on 12th Street between 5th & 6th Ave. Went to PS 124,PS40 and Manual. I found someone in the thread who is part of a family we grew up with and several people in the group encouraged me to keep writing since we had a lot in common. Many of the stories and history I have been writing about included just about all of park Slope. :D:D

When I saw your posting it brought back some fond/sad memories of your brother Michael. When I was in college I worked at an after school center for the Board of ED on Prospect Ave above 5th avenue & above the used car dealer next to the Polish Hall.

We had a gym and other activities. I instructed Body Building/ weightlifting that was my passion. I remember when Michael, Francis Dowd, Steven Strong, Gregory, Louie etc……. would come in the winter when it was cold or when they had nothing to do. We would work out & talk & talk. Your brother & I had the Polish bond! We use to laugh & joke about it. Mike had such a deviously good smile. I remember quite well after Michael’s passing some of those I mention above came to see me they were devastated we spent hours talking about it. When you lose someone there is not much you can say to relieve the pain but to listen. The loss can be unbearable but the memory will live on.

It was clear that Michael’s life had influenced all of us.

To those who left before their time I pay tribute John Fox, Michael (Kimble) Monlescue, Eddie Denie, Mary Gonzowski, Rosario, Mc Fee etc……..

We all shared a time & place. It made us who we are today.
    My Favorite prayer:

AS I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If, I die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take.
And If I wake another day I thank thee Lord for one more Day

    Best Regards,
    Steve

My wife family has a tradition, oppose to clanging pots, they collect old dishes during the year and every new year's eve, each person throws a dish for good luck. What a mess, lol

Well, I hope this goes through lol
  • Wow ,posted on first try. On a roll here.
  • Hey Deb- thanks for passing on the hello to John Barrett for me. This page is sure a great way to make me feel like I am home. How was he doing? I think he has a couple of daughter like me...I am sure that keeps him busy.

With Halloween right around the corner my nine year old is prancing around the house in her costume. This reminds me of the costume in a box my mother would by me every year. The plastic mask with a thin rubber band to go around your head you know the one that always broke before you got home. I can remember being Frankenstein, Batman and everyone else.

I remember going from building to building and then switching masks with my friends but leaving the rest of the costume on and getting even more candy from the same houses we just hit. Like we needed more candy

    Hi Steve
I want to thank you for the beautiful words...you truly made my night. I wish I could remember who you are...but I guess that was around the time where he didnt want his little sister following him. I still miss him so much....and my 25yo Son Vinny has his same personality and fears nothing....which scares the heck out of me. You are also so right in what you said...We all shared a time & place. It made us who we are today. I had a very hard time accepting why no one helped him while he was drowning...maybe they feared for themselves...I dont know....but what I did do was become a 911 Operator....and every life I had a small part in saving each night....I would strike one up to my brother.
    Thank you again Steve...

    Sue
  • Hi all, Halloween is one of my all time favorite occasions. Michael Fox threw the best Halloween Parties and I miss him. If he were still here, and was having another party, I would drive up to be there. He was the best. The party was on Staten Island.
  • Ralph T: That is so funny, Staten Italy !!! Anyone out there ??

When we finished going around for Halloween, we prepared for doing the Thanksgiving thing, lol. We used to say, "Anything for Thanksgiving"? Strange, right?? Could you imagine kids doing that today? It was fun though and helped restock our candy supply. Sometimes all we got was fruit !!
  • Thanks Chris and everyone ....I have to get this coffee pot...Im gonna try the camping sections and the hardware stores....and just my luck ...they said in the news that drinking coffee shrinks your boobs....just great! So I guess Im getting it now for the aroma....lol.

Can I go back to the johnny pump posts....I remember one hot day in the summer...we were all hanging out on 24st....and the johnny pump was on full blast......there was this guy....I think his name was Freddy Garcia....he was having a ball throwing everyone in the water....after about the 7th girl....he came twds me and said now you sweety....lol...yep he picked me up and held me in the gushing water for about 4 minutes ....till I told him I was holding his wallet for him .....lmao....what memories....dont know whatever happened to him.... :(
  • It was harder for us to use the johnny pump much on our block (20th 6 to 7) because it is a 2 way street and always had a lot of traffic. Some crazy kids would try to shoot the water at cars passing by even convertibles!!
  • So, usually we went up to 7th Avenue or around to 21st Street.
  • Janet... do you remember the Devine's?
  • Of course. I grew up across the street from them. I adored them, Jack and Elena
  • I was heart broken when Jack passed away. He was probably one of the main reasons I joined the fire department.
  • They were all good people...I went to school with Joanne...her Mom used to bake the cupcakes around St Patty's day and we would bring them up to the nursing home on 16st & 8th ave....now that I think about it...I hope someone was making sure the diabetics didnt get a cupcake.... :?
  • fire dept? where did you work?
