Best Internet Service Provider? — Brooklynian

Best Internet Service Provider?

Again, I'm new to the area. I'm looking for the best ISP. I'll likely get cable as well but no phone. Any ISPs to stay away from? Who do you use and why?

Comments

  • Well if you want broad band you have 2 choices Verizon DSL and Whoever your cable company is
  • Thanks. Does anyone have a preferred cable company or reasons for staying away from any particular one?
  • I prefer Time Warner, but as far as I know our only options in the hood are cablevision or satellite. I finally caved and had cablevision installed last week, and the guy installing the cable and I spent 10 min talking about why cablevision sucks, and how the installation gent is trying to get a job with Time Warner. Hah.

As for the net, people on this board keep saying we can get Verizon DSL, but when I plugged my addy in to their website, they said service was not available in the nabe yet. Perhaps I just live on the wrong side of the street.
  • I'd say that cablevision (optoline?) has decent service and relatively quick turnaround on installation timelines. My internet speeds are definitely faster than my friend's TimeWarner service (he gets ~8mbit/sec DL max, I can max my line out at ~15mbit/sec, with a 2mbit/sec upload speed), however I don't know how their TV/DVR package stacks up (I don't have a TV).

i'd say if FIOS was available to try that out, but I think Verizon hasn't covered this part of brooklyn yet.
  • Just to follow up on this:

Apparently the apartments next to me, above me, and below me can all get Verizon DSL because they are all lucky enough to live in apartments where at some point in the past, someone installed a verizon phone line. The current residents may not use these phone lines (and in turn, do not have to pay for them), but because the lines were installed, they can receive Verizon DSL.

I, on the other hand, live in an apartment that has never had a verizon phone line, so in order for me to get Verizon DSL I have to also purchase and maintain a Verizon phone. Lame.
  • Who uses a home phone in 2009, its just a waste of money
Altho my friend still has a home phone but i dont ask why cuz some people are old fashioned
