3 random things: att code, wtf is up w/ eeepcs,

1. at&t code

my cell phone got stolen (very long story, involved a shotgun - feel free to buy me a drink if you want to hear the whole thing) and I have an unlocked motorola that I bought here in ecuador. however, when I stick my at&t sim card in, it wants a code. wtf? I´m still in ecuador but coming back soon! helpz.

2. eeepc

my laptop was also stolen (le sigh) and I´m broke (yes, they stole money, too. getting robbed is expensive) so I kinda wanted to order an eeepc from newegg. however, the only models they have available are pretty old. and on bestbuy the stupid things are preloaded with xp. blech.

3. linux

I have a relatively newish dell laptop (I´d guess it´s from either late 06 or early 07) that I´d like to load linux onto (it didn´t get stolen b/c it´s safe in bklyn). which of the downloadable installers are most user friendly/have the most drivers for things like dell laptops?

thanks!

p.s. will be back friday night. so if you can help me with the at&t code thing, we could meet up!

    Welcome back!

I've only played with Linux a little bit, but it seems that Ubuntu is the most ready for prime-time.
  • on the linux tip, I've been running linux/bsd on most of my personal and work machines for several years, and I have to say that after all the tinkering/etc that I've enjoyed doing...nowadays I like simple. For linux, go with Ubuntu. Its simple, has most or all the drivers you need for most mainline hardware vendors, and has a pretty active community with lots of tips and help for newcomers.
  • cool. thanks all. I might actually have a machine up & running on friday night! :)
