Where do I live? — Brooklynian

Where do I live?

Hey all,

I did a quick search of this board and of the Ditmas Park blog and couldn't find a map that shows where, exactly, Ditmas Park is.

See, when I went to look at my current apt, it was advertised as being in Kensington. Through some process of elimination I don't even recall the details of, I determined that I actually live in Ditmas Park. But now I'm not so sure...

I have a friend who lives a 10 min walk away and she's in Midwood, so maybe I am too? It's all so confusing.

So if anyone knows where I can find maps of brooklyn nabes, I would love to give them a look.

Thanks!

Emma

  • what are the cross streets?
  • First question: Are you in Kensington or Flatbush? If you're west of Coney Island Avenue, you're in Kensington, east is Flatbush.

Second question: Are your street signs green or brown? If brown, you're in a historic district, such as Ditmas Park.

  • Subject: Checkout this NYC Site for Neighborhood Locations

FWIW, some of these so called neighborhood names are made up by real estate agents to make a particular location more sellable. For example, my house is considered to be in Old Mill Basin but it's actually in the southern part of Flatlands. Real estate agents know that the houses in Mill Basin are generally worth more so they looked to associate that fact on the houses in my immediate neighborhood. Funny though as per the NYC neighborhood map I looked at a the above link it shows where I live as being "Mill Basin" and the neighborhood most of us in the area think of as "Mill Basin" is identified as "Mill Island". And don't get me started on "Bergen Beach" because if you can find a beach in that neighborhood I'll buy you a dozen bagels from the Mill Basin Bagel Cafe which is considered to be in Bergen Beach. :-)
