Lots of view and not much else... — Brooklynian

Lots of view and not much else...

So, I'm disappointed in this message board. Many interesting posts, and apparently lots and lots of folks viewing the various topics. However, there are almost no active threads, barely any replies or discussion... just plain terrible. Terrible.

Comments

  • I posted a similar note back when I moved from Prospect Heights to this nabe. I think a lot of people just don't know the board exists, and there isn't a large youth community (from what I've seen walking around) so there isn't much to post about. But I try to be proactive and start threads, and now that you've noticed that this board needs more love, hopefully you'll post more, too.

Indeed. Maybe if you keep complaining, there will be more activity. Call yourself a whaaaambulence or something.
  • haha daveb: points for "whaaaambulence"
  • daveb can you define whaaaambulence?? :salut:
  • Whaaaambulence: A fictional abulance or rescue squad for someone who cries or whines, most often without provication.
  • Thank you sir for enlightening my day,,,
  • I shouldn't bother responding to these childish replies, but I will. I have posted several times on this message board. The topic hear was actually in response to the fact that a couple of my posts and actually the majority on this board have DOZENS or HUNDREDS of views, but very very few replies.

This was my attempt to say... Hey everyone reading on here, why don't you participate. I think we're all actually in agreement, but you just lack the ability to be civil.
  • so pick a topic of interest and carry on,,,,we are all waiting
  • what would you like to discuss?
  • Oh my lord Rala... again, I shouldn't reply... Here is my original post:

"Many interesting posts, and apparently lots and lots of folks viewing the various topics. However, there are almost no active threads, barely any replies or discussion..."

Does that suggest i am disappointed in the TOPICS?! NO!

I'm disappointed in the RESPONSES and LACK OF DISCUSSION to the many many interested threads that have *already* been started. There are many treads... and lots and lots of viewing... but very little discussion.

    AAARGH!
  • So lets discuss one of those threads that have been started..maybe i'm one of the people that has also viewed those thresds and wondered why there where no responses,,,,if i'm not mistaked I think I originally tried to start a discuss here quite awhile ago and there was never any response,,,so I do understand your frustration and I was simply trying to get something started,,,
  • Sorry rala... I thought you were jumping on the bandwagon with Flexichick and DaveB above.

I was hoping this post would simply prod people to be more active on the message board, rather than just reading. If people are interested in viewing a topic 2000+ times, you would think that there would be more than a dozen replies. (That's not any thread in particular, just a generalization reflecting what the board looks like.)

Also, the heavy view/low participation seems particuarly bad for this part of brooklynian. The park slope and prospect heights sections seem to have more activity.
  • different type of people
  • exactly, (speaking for myself) the prospect heights and park slope people read these threads, but have little to nothing to contribute.

Most of the board's users don't live in this 'hood.
  • they also dont frequent the merchants,,,,
  • rala wrote: they also dont frequent the merchants,,,,
right, and being that most posts in PS and PH are complaining about either the merchants or the neighbors, that leaves you folks out of luck.

You'll have to listen people whine about other neighborhoods, not yours.

...I can almost assure you, we'd whine about your 'hood too if we were more familiar with it.
  • I can almost assure you, we'd whine about your 'hood too if we were more familiar with it.
It's probably just because there really isn't much to whine about. Maybe talking about how great this area is would be too boring for a message board like this.

But since I am posting...love Sycamore. Going to be there tomorrow around 4. See you all there!
  • I think if you take any thread on Brooklynian, you'll see a lot more views than replies. That's just the way forums tend to be-- there are always more lurkers/readers than active posters.

As for why the Flatbush forum is less active, it's simply because fewer members live in this neighborhood. I think the board was initially intended to focus on other neighborhoods like Prospect Heights and Park Slope. Until recently, the less popular forums for Flatbush, Windsor Terrace, etc. were even in a separate section called "Other Neighborhoods". Now the neighborhood forums are all given equal prominence at the top of the index page, so maybe slowly more residents of those neighborhoods will join the forum.
  • Tybur 6 look at what we started,,,yea!!!people are writing on our message boards,,,,I knew it would work,,,,good job Tybur6
  • Tybur6, just a message board tip:
It's generally a good idea to start new topics off with a good attitude, as opposed to a tone chock full of condemnation (yes, saying "just plain terrible. Terrible." comes off as a condemnation)—especially when those you are condemning are the ones you are trying to get to post more.

And in case you are curious, here is the thread I mentioned in my first post:, please go here: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=436052&highlight=#436052
It may help explain even further why there are so many views and not many replies.

Also, does anyone know how posts are counted? Is it by ISP By user per day? Or is each click a visit? B/C I know I check the board a lot from work, and since there are not a lot of changes each hour, I will sometimes re-read posts. I imagine I'm not the only person rereading posts, and this could increase the view count. Just a thought.
