Traffic Lights?
Good morning--so, does anyone know how to go about requesting traffic lights on un-traffic-lit streets? I mean, I know I'm not going to get, "OMG, sure, what a great idea! We'll have them in place tomorrow!", but I would like to make the suggestion. I live out in Bushwick and crossing Wilson Ave is scary as f***. Usually, I'm on foot, but this morning the bf and I were taking the dogs to the vet via car, and our entire ragtag family was almost KILLED by an oncoming vehicle (there are no four way stops either--it's just a shoot-across-the-road-fast-when-you-see-an-opening type of deal). It's just super difficult to see oncoming traffic from both directions while trying to inch forward to see past the parked cars AND watch out for passers-by. I know we had the same problem on Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill until the traffic lights were installed last year.
I seriously doubt my asking will bring change--I mean, I couldn't even get a NY Metro stand installed at the Wilson Ave subway stop, wah wahhh--but I'd at least like to throw in my two cents to whoever it is who's paid to listen. Gracias.

I would call 311.

There needs to be 1 or more fatal accidents before they put traffic lights over there. You can call all you want, but they will conduct a traffic study and they will look over data of any accidents at that intersection. NYC DOT is the dept to speak to regarding this matter.

Subject: Traffic Lights: Community Board
Hello.
Attending your local Community Board meeting would go a long way toward addressing these kinds of issues.
Monthly Community Board meetings are attended by representatives from your local precinct and by area politicians.
Good luck and be safe. -

Yeah, that seems to be the pattern. There were a couple well publicized cases on intersections on Queens Blvd and Northern Blvd and how it took FOREVER to get lights in some spots. Even after people died. -
If you flood the lines with calls it can work also. There was a one direction stop sign by the Kings Highway train station for ages. One day the bus driver told everyone to call 311 to get an all way stop sign put in. I can only assume other drivers did also. P.S. a month later an all way stop sign was put in. Power in masses!!

You can also call or visit your local assemblyman in your district. Or better yet your Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez. A local politician has influence and can get things done.

I for one am not in favor of the pattern of installing traffic lights & stop signs willy nilly at every intersection. Are you sure what you witnessed wasn't just a one off problem and not a chronic issue? The way things are going in the very near future there will be a traffic light on every corner and it will wreck havoc with traffic patterns all over the city.
Maybe doing something about reducing the number of cars registered to people who live in the city would be a better problem to work on.
Howdy, Stranger!
