Loud music
At the risk of sounding like an old lady, I'm going to complain! The restuarant below my apartment occassionally has private parties (normally, they close at 10 PM). Tonight is one of those nights. Everything in my apartment is vibrating. I can't even hear the TV. Normally, it usually doesn't bother me when they do this - I'm either out or it's not that bothersome. Tonight it's like a fucking disco down there. My ass is literally shaking on my couch to the music. And not by choice. I really like the owner of the place so I don't make too much of a fuss. The only time I've complained to her was when I had the flu and a 103 fever. I'm giving them til midnight, then I'm going to have to call down there.

I know the feeling well. I lived in my apartment for 5 years and my landlord decided to rent out the storefront to a bar called The BlackRabbit and it was a living hell because I lived directly above the bar. The bar owner invested a lot of money into the building so needless to say, my landlord would not get involved since the bar owner just increased the value of his building. The bar owner was so inconsiderate and my landlord and his wife-even less. I had several calls to 311 and many visits from the department of environmental protection but the noise never measured to the violation limit. It did not mean that I did not feel the floor vibrating and had to sleep with BOSE headphones on. I, the respectful tenant and neighbor witnessed a burglary to the bar one Sunday morning- the police came and arrested the guy. I had to testify to the grand jury and all I got was a "oh you must have been scared" from the bar owner and nothing from my landlord. I couldn't believe it. When we were at court, the police officer clarified to him that the police responded to my call and not his alarm company as he first thought. The prick showed no gratitude and continued to show no respect to his neighbors above him. As I was moving out, the new next door neighbors were complaining about the same noise and they were also driven out by the noise within a short time. My landlord wanted me out so much he raised my rent from 1650 to 1900. I would have preferred to sleep outside in the cold than over that bar. It is one thing to move in to a place above a bar or a restaurant but when you are there for a long period of time and they build a bar/restaurant- it is a life changing event and unbelievably stressful. I know it seems like you are a nagging old woman or man but what they here in their space is not necessarily what you here in yours. Good luck with your situation.

It's fairly infrequent so I always feel like an asshole if I complain about it. And it's usually on a Saturday night - I don't feel much like an asshole if I complain when they do it on a Sunday night. It sounds like a DJ, the whole place vibrates to the sound of the music but stops frequently for the DJ to shout out something in Spanish. And it's still going on at 1 AM!

Never a fun thing. You'd think in instances where a building has a bar/restaurant that is open mega late the rent for residents would be less given how much is made off the business on the ground floor? But that might just me being a crazy person.
p.s.- iliveingreenpoint, i'm a frequenter of black rabbit. i must say i always find the level of the music in there to be the most tolerably leveled of most bars. good music AND you can talk to the people you're out with! good times. but that said being in the bar has nothing to do with living above it so even what may seem like low level for bar standards can echo within an apartment above it as any other would. funny though cause on a few occasions there i've thought to myself "man if i'd ever live above a bar again it'd be this one, i bet the folks upstairs cant even hear it". wrong on that! -
Try drilling a small hole through your floor above the DJ booth. Accidentally drop a tub of sugar water close to the hole. Wait 10 min's and sleep.
