moving to williamsburg?
so i worked in finance and got laid off and am considering moving in with a friend in williamsburg. i currently live in the east village and the move would save me about $500-$600 a month.
The apt is off the Lorimer st on the L train and about 6 blocks from the station. Is that area considered safe? I'm use to seeing lots of people and stores open near my apt (1st ave between 3rd and 4th st) Even though something can happen anywhere, at least there are people around or somewhere to run to. Yesterday when i went to visit at night, i saw very few people and practically nothing open.
any advice would be appreciated.
thanks

In general it's a pretty safe area, but yeah, it gets quiet at night.
(I lived on Graham for 2 years and spent a lot of time on Lormier)
But it really depends what block you're on. Are you north of Metropolitan or south? -

I lived in that area for 2 yrs, and thought it was pretty safe. I'm a 5ft tall female, to give you some context. I never felt unsafe there. But like anywhere, you just have to be smart & pay attention to your surroundings.

Scholes is indeed south of Metro. I'd say it is indeed generally pretty safe. It's not the Bedford area so most places are closed late at night but there's still a fair amount of bodegas open late and the Kellog Diner is back and kickin'. There's some projects near by but just be aware of what's goin on around you as you would any place. It's a great neighborhood, you'll love it.

And let us not forget Bushwick Country Club. Where I will be tonight after band practice.

Welcome to Williamsburg! I'm so jealous you are close to Dumont. The side streets can be pretty quiet in the evening, but if you are alert and aware of your surroundings you should be fine.
Just don't be foolish (i.e. walking home from the bars alone at 3:00 am), put the number for Right Rides into your cellphone (they will drive you home for free on Saturday nights), and have fun.
Local Color to keep your eyes peeled for: Metropolitan Avenue, summertime, outside the "hardware" store. Those nice old men in ban-lon shirts are real, old-school Joe Bonanno gangsters.
Howdy, Stranger!
