I had a break in when I lived in Boston. At the time, the detective told me that a big deterrent for burglars just the sound of the alarm. Whether or not it's connected to a call center is irrelevant for the thief--he's not going to stick around to find out.
As for insurance, we use Amica and it's surprisingly cheap. -
Very true about the alarms. When we had our break-in, the burglars went to amazing lengths to avoid breaking anything and making any noise (like removing 10 glass candle holders from a windowsill, forcing the window open rather than busting it). I think it does make a difference (at least I hope it does, since we bought little alarms!)
State Farm was good about reimbursing us, but dumped us since the burglary happened so soon after we bought the policy.
