Where to buy an Air Conditioner?

Does anyone know a good place to buy a window unit? I've never had to buy one before, and I'm not really sure about how much they should cost. Ballpark? Thanks.

you have to know how big your room is, then learn about BTU.

I suggest costco or bjs if you have a membership or know someone who does. you cannot beat their prices.i bought a 12000 btu ac last year with remote control for under 300 dollars at bjs.pc richards had it almost 200 dollars more. they are overpriced anyway.not too many places to buy an ac as everyone has gone out of business so bestbuy, target, walmart and pc richards as a last resort.good luck. suppose to be mid eighties on saturday so a good indication that this will be one hell of a hot summer.

While the above poster knocks PC Richards, I do recall they used to have a wizard on their website that helped you work out what type and size of AC unit you needed based on type of window, power socket and room size.

Go to home depot or Lowe's. Both of generous return policies. Buy an AC. If you like it, keep it. If you don't like it, return it at the end of the summer.

Whatever you do, buy one early. If you wait until June or July when it's finally warm enough to need one, most stores will have limited options let.

Figure out which window you want to use b/c if it has burglar bars (that don't have an ac nook, you'll have to get a special type.

I like the Frigidaire's in general. Those, and maybe most other brands these days, usually come with a remote that has a temp gauge in it. That way, you can have the remote away from the ac and window and set the ac to just come on once it gets above a certain temperature inside the room.

If informing someone that a particular business sells their products at a much higher price is considered knocking them so be it. For the difference in their prices they need to help you figure out what ac is needed and throw in delivery for free.

Shop online and then call the guys at J & R on 7th ave and they'll beat the price. They're terrific.

I've only gotten a few small things there, but they were very nice and helpful.

I got my A/C there last year and it's great.

I have 2 window ACs for sale in Prospect Heights.

one is 5500 BTUs, energy star, remote. $30 o.b.o.

other is larger/more powerful 11500 BTUs. Older, but really cranks and we never needed to set it above the low setting. Auto-moving directional vanes, winter cover included. $30 o.b.o.

Last year, in the middle of a minor heat wave, my unit broke and I went to a bunch of places and found that PC Richards had the best price. Plus, all the other places wouldn't get me a unit for at least 10 days, but even with a rush going on, PC got me mine installed in 3 days. The salesman was so nice and helpful plus the guy they sent over to install it looked (and sounded) just like Denis Leary.

There is a really inexpensive appliance store and big selection-BUZZ it is called on Coney Island Ave between J and K but they are Sabbath observers so you have to go on Sunday or during the week. Bought airconditioners, microwaves, all sorts of appliances from them, price is right and selection good.

Home Depot only had a couple out yesterday and Lowes didn't have any

That said I tried a Fridgidare last year, in and out and back it went, way too noisy, were cheaply made with poor insulation, and did not have a slide out chasis

I have 2 LG units, the cool well and are quiet

If you get a unit 8K BTU or more get one with a slide out chasis, makes install and winter storage much easier

For a smaller unit LG makes a nice low profile unit about 6K btu that lets you open the window more.

When you get them installed have them add a bar across the window frame instead of attaching to the sash so you can open and close the window

home depot or lowes for sure. i got mine last summer for $45 each and they're going strong. make sure you know your measurements of your place before buying one
