dog grooming

I have been on the prowl recently for a good place to get the pooch groomed. He is in need of a good cleaning, but also a nice short summer cut (poor guy is plotzing in this heat). However, for every good thing I hear about a place, I hear just as many bad ones. I even tried the petmobile people, but they never responded. I know nowhere is perfect, but there must be SOME place that many people can agree is pretty good. I can't trust just *anyone* with the pooch.

I am in Boerum Hill, but am willing to travel if need be.

  • I've posted this here before, but we like Laura Gil a lot. Her prices are very reasonable and she does a great job and our puppy is very happy with her. She's in Carroll Gardens (we're also in Boerum Hill). Her e-mail is [email protected].
  • I have an appt. with the Aussie Mobile groomer. They didn't respond to the email I sent, but did to the phone call. It's pricey - 85 bucks for the O-man. But he's a fat ass and is in dire need of a bath, a nail clipping and an ear cleaning (he's a boxer so no real hair cutting). From what I was told, he'll be in a self contained vehicle (that I'll inspect), the sanitize between every appt., he'll be brought back completely dried (not damp like I leave him - hell, I leave him sopping wet and let him run around). While I do think the price is steep, it's worth it not to have to cart his ass to the groomer and he's too big for the subway and most car services won't take dogs of his size.
  • Rod, who works at Prospect Park Animal Clinic gets high marks from most (see thread below). I would try him for the small stuff we get done, like nail trim but my schedule hasn't let me take my pup to Rod yet. Call PPAC to get his number b/c you have to make the appointment through him, not the vet's office.

While waiting to see the vet's I have seen some tricky looking haircut requests come in and they looked good to me afterwards.

  • yukino, who owns Animal Loving Care is the best groomer i've ever used hands down. and she adores animals, which should be a prerequisite for a groomer, but unfortunately isn't. she is the master of the japanese-style puppy cut! check out her site. my little crested (lambchop) and white fluffy (budda) are represented in the "beautiful animals" section!

  • Thanks for the all the suggestions! I ended up contacting Laura Gil, and she was great! You were right Antigone - Rudolph was a happy camper...and so was I (though we did walk home in the rain - I have that kind of luck). It was his first groom and she was very patient with him.

If you are looking for a good groomer with reasonable prices who takes one dog at a time (hence, no cages) I highly recommend Laura Gil as well.
  • DDA, I'm so glad you and Rudolph liked Laura! I know that our Louie can be a handful - he's a big squirmy bulldog puppy and obedience is not one of his virtues - but she handles him beautifully and he comes back with a nice pedicure, clean ears and a glossy coat. She was also very caring when Louie was sick recently and we appreciated that.
