In November we ask you to dig deep into your stash and hearts for a good cause, the Afghans for Afghans (A4A) charity blanket drive. Knit PH co-pilot Eliza Brown will be organizing this winter charity.

Game Plan:
1. Make knit or crochet squares that are 8" X 8"; use any patern or the FREE pattern we provide. Squares will be sewn together at a later date (TBA)
2. A4A asks that you use 100% wool/natural fibers (not man-made).
3. You can drop off your squares at Prospect Perk Cafe for Tony (that's me)

On this night we are organizing a left-over yarn exchange, so cleanse your hoarded treasure and make room for someone else's new-old collection. Yarn left over from this exchange will be used for A4A charity.

Freddy's Bar has Frosty beer, martinis, wine, wine from a box, and interesting decor — always available on this night: swift, wool winder, yardage counter and good conversation. Crocheters are welcome and men are encouraged. Freddy's Bar is located at the corner of Dean Street and 6th Avenue, near Pacific/Atlantic Station and Bergen 2/3 stop, right down the street from the 78th Precinct. Getting there is easier than getting arrested.

Reminder: Next month Knit PH will meet at Freddy's on Sunday, December 6 '09. That's the first Sunday that month.

Comments

  • A4A coordinator Eliza Brown advises that in order to respect Islamic tradition, patterns that you might use should not represent:
    - human or animal likenesses (faces in particular)
    - religious symbols
    - national symbols

This might include squares that look like bacon (watch those colors people). Instead, use abstract or geometric designs like stripes, dots, hearts, moons, clovers, diamonds..etc.

Although it's not a requirement, use bold bright colors in your patterns. Green is the symbolic color of Islam. Believed to have been the prophet Muhammad's favorite color, and the color of the first Islamic flag.
