milk
there is probably a thread about this place already, but just wanted to say that i tried this place for the last time today. it was my fourth attempt at getting food there. the first three times i was treated rudely by people at the counter and told that the food i wanted was all gone or that they were about to close. today i stopped by hoping to get something to try at least and even though i only ordered avocado toast and cinnamon toast, it took twenty minutes and cost $7. then it was packaged badly to go. the counter person was pleasant this time, but i won't be going back. made me miss the garden cafe even more.

......as in Milk Bar?
wow....couldn't disagree with this more. been there countless times, both for breakfast in the morning and take-out in the afternoon. the male owner is an incredibly nice guy who will often give you free stuff in the afternoon. the female owner is definitely all business but, hey, she's got a business to run.
food is slightly overpriced, but nowhere near busting the bank, and very good. Those toasties are extremely filling. the Counter Culture coffee is divine and, when you combine it with the La Colombe being brewed at the new Cafe Regular du Nord and the number of places brewing Stumptown in the neighborhood, gives you quite the holy trinity of coffees within walking distance.
i've seen some people walk out of there upset but, frankly, every time i've seen someone walk out of there upset, it was them being more unreasonable than the staff.
sucks that you had a few bad experiences, but i can't say i come even close to sharing the sentiment. -
i agree, JO518....been here a few times and love it.
think it's one of the better additions to prospect heights and judging by the large crowds, they seem to be doing great. -
I've never been because on here it seems to have more negatives than positives. It seems weird that someone saying that they liked the place includes things like "food is slightly overpriced" and "i've seen people walk out of there upset" - not usually something i think is good in a place. If someone is upset, regardless of the reason, the shop should care to try to make it right - not let them walk out.

Vote with your pocket book/wallet. If you have just one "decent" place to get food, go there often and spend $$. That way, the place you love stays open and the place you hate closes.
I live in an area with very few good quality coffee shops/restaurants. Many of them cater to specific clientele. English speakers have difficulty placing orders if they only speak English. When Jerry's Bagels opened up in my neighborhood, I started to go in there daily to buy soups, coffee and other things.
Its so tragic when you have a rude waiter/waitress or service person. I had a similar experience and posted about it here on Brooklynian. I have decided that since the food was sub par anyway, to vote with my pocketbook and never go back there. I will be frequenting Korzo or Lot 2 where the food is great and the staff is even better. -
I've been to Milk Bar several times, and they've always been extremely nice to me.

Been to this place 3 times. Food always good, service as well. Clean easy. high price but never rude. 9 dollar tiny sandwich does not equal rude. Good coffee but never rude.

I would argue that food in New York City is slightly overpriced to begin with, and that there are things, such as quality, which can make up for your food costing more than what you'd get at a counter deli, or whatnot. The quality here is good, which means I have no problem giving them $10-12 for breakfast. Not everything is going be less than $5 around here, nor should it be.
I've seen someone be upset because a place that seats about 20 wouldn't kick someone who was sitting down out in order go guarantee them a table. I once saw a guy be escorted out because he began screaming and claiming discrimination because he wasn't ackowledged for the entirety of less than five minutes in which he was sitting in a table. I considered both of those pretty unreasonable on the customer's behalf, yes. I agree that a restaurant should do what they can to make something right, but there's limits when the person on the other end is being unreasonable. Next time, I'll try not to give such a fair assessment and just shill. I'm sure that will be recieved well on here.

people who work at milk bar are the sweetest! the customers though, not as consistent.
*i wish everything were $1 cheaper, but it won't stop me from going back. -
Milk Bar is best thing to happen to Vanderbilt in a long time. Everyone who works there, especially the owners, are incredibly nice and accommodating. The food and coffee are excellent.
-
Nothing to get excited about.

I have never had a problem with anyone who works there, and I think the sandwiches are quite good. Having said that, they are pretty grossly overpriced and I feel ripped off every time I go. Thing is, there isn't really an equivalent in the neighborhood at the moment, so sometimes I don't mind paying $9 for a sandwich that should really be about $6.50.

Everyone is nice as can be and it's a great place to sit, eat and have some coffee. They just don't have workable take out containers, even to grab a cup of coffee to go is just not what you would expect.

This is all I have to say
Went there about 3 months ago and ordered a regular ice coffee and a blue berry muffin.
total $6.89
FUCK...THAT...PLACE...IN...THE...EAR!!!!!!! -
jg,
You give new meaning to the term "getting an earful."

Ok, i first read this as "in the rear", but I think "in the ear" is even funnier

LOCK YOU EARS

I also think Milk bar is great. A really nice addition to Vanderbilt. The people that work there are consistently nice and often go out of their way to be accommodating. Sure, I wish it were cheaper, but isn't that true for everything in NYC?

I had the yogurt and granola. I am very little and my appetite is too, but even I was still hungry afterward. And broke.
I like the people though and the atmosphere, it's just not working on my wallet. -
The prices are for the rich and glamorous: I saw Olivia Thirlby there in the past week.

LOL @ jg. Hilarious.
