Free vin etching on Sundays? — Brooklynian

Free vin etching on Sundays?

christina
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I talked to someone at the 78th precinct recently about vin etching my bike and he mentioned that on Sundays - or just this Sunday? - from 11-3pm you can get your bike etched for free at Prospect Park at the corner of Ocean Parkway and Flatbush.
Although this sounded detailed he wasn't really sure and I haven't found any confirmation on this anywhere, nor can I reach the right contact at the precinct now.

Does anyone know anything about this?

  • From NYPD website:

    Bike Registration
Goal: to enroll bicycles into the program in each precinct.
Bicycle is marked with an identification number using an engraver. A decal is affixed to the bicycle, which is difficult to remove. In the event that it is removed "void" appears on what remains of the decal.

In the event that the bicycle is stolen and recovered, it can be traced back to the owner through I.D. number.

  • Correct, that's as (not-) useful as their website is. It doesn't answer my question though and nobody at the precinct returns the voice message I left a few days ago.

Not so funny story, the other day when I walked into the precinct to report my old bike stolen they told me to go back to the place where it happened and call 911.
...but then when they showed up they didn't even get out of the car to inspect the place like they said they would have to do.

    Sigh.
