BK Lets help our kids grow

There is a new educational center called CoolBrow Learning on Nostrand and Bergen, which I must talk about. The company is a great resource for the community. So far the company have had great success with their students, who have seen drastic increases in their grades. We have to support these guys!!!!!!!!!! With statistics like only 40% of New York students not graduating high school, its gotta stop. I want to ask you a question, do you think education is a waste of time or is it important?

  • Since you are obviously new to this site, prepare yourself for the following:

    (1) People will accuse you of being a shill because this is your first post and it is focused on trying to sell something

    (2) You will be drubbed for saying that Bergen and Nostrand is in Prospect Heights

    Good Luck!

  • Do you mean to say 40% graduate and 60% do not graduate or that practically 40% do not graduate? Who would ever say education is not important?

  • Sounds interesting. If you are the owner or operator it would have been nice to state that, tell people a little about yourself, why you decided to open the business, yada yada yada....no need to shill around these parts. Seems like people in Crown Heights love local, especially when it's an improvement.

    Good luck!

  • Well, I am not the owner, but I do know the owners personally. I believe that what they are doing is great. I grew up in brooklyn and have had the pleasure of seeing most of my classmates not graduating. By the way Jack, I never said that the site is in Prospect heights, but they do home tutoring throughout brooklyn. Just trying to get the word out for a good cause.

  • BK, let's help our kids learn how to write!

  • >>do you think education is a waste of time or is it important?

I wish I knew the answer to this. Some of the most successful people in the world have had very little formal education. But for sure, they all had basic skills like reading, writing, etc, as BKChickie says, and they had social and economic advantages that many kids in CH will never have.

It would be a good MLK "day of service" project idea to focus on education for kids who need it the most. But what annoys me a little bit is the whole idea of a DAY of service. Spending a few hours one Monday a year may make the giver of service feel good... but it is not going to change anything for the receiver of service.

  • While you did not technically state it to be in PH, you posted it on the PH, not the CH, board.

  • speaking from the perspective of a College Student, I am flabbergasted at how many foreigners have taken a strong hold and have dominated sheer numbers within classrooms, specifically mathematics and sciences. We are a capitalistic society. Therefore, I believe that a foreigner has every right to learn. However, the lack of or limited presence of American students reflect the lack of priority placed on the education system. (I think this reflect poorly on the values of Americans, not the system) It’s a shame.
