Tony Kushner, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for the play "Angels in America," and author of the Oscar-nominated screenplay for "Lincoln," joins Kolot Chayeinu/Voices of Our Lives's Rabbi Ellen Lippmann, who was recently named among America’s Most Inspiring Rabbis by The Forward, for an intimate conversation, reception and book signing on May 9, at 7:00pm, at Kolot Chayeinu in Park Slope, Brooklyn. "Lincoln: The Screenplay" will be available thanks to the Community Bookstore. This special evening launches Kolot Chayeinu's TALK THE TALK annual lecture series.
“We could not be more thrilled that Tony – one of our nation’s greatest artists – will be with us and help launch this new series,” explained Kolot President Cynthia Greenberg. “His work has changed American theater, moved and inspired people the world over, and he is beloved by us at Kolot.”
Kolot Chayeinu is a 20-year-strong progressive, independent congregation in Brooklyn that is known for its warmth and openness, commitment to diversity, social justice work and for a loving and spirited wrestling with Jewish tradition; as Kolot’s mission statement joyfully declares: “[Kolot is] where doubt can be an act of faith.” To celebrate the congregation’s 20th year, Kolot will debut a new “Talk the Talk” annual lecture series, that will bring prominent thought leaders and artists to the congregation each year to speak about contemporary Jewish life in America, Jewish history, politics and culture.

Kushner's best known work is Angels in America, a seven-hour epic about the AIDS epidemic in Reagan-era New York, which was later adapted into an HBO miniseries for which Kushner wrote the screenplay. His other plays include Hydriotaphia, Slavs!: Thinking About the Longstanding Problems of Virtue and Happiness, A Bright Room Called Day, Homebody/Kabul, The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism With a Key to the Scriptures and Caroline, or Change. His new translation of Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children was performed at the Delacorte Theater in the summer of 2006, starring Meryl Streep and directed by George C. Wolfe. Kushner has also
adapted Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan, Corneille's The Illusion, and S. Ansky's play The Dybbuk. His collaboration with the late great illustrator Maurice Sendak included an award-winning children’s story-book adaptation of Brundibar.
He co-wrote the screenplay for the Steven Spielberg film Munich and is the subject of a 2006 documentary feature, Wrestling With Angels, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Kushner’s highly acclaimed screenplay for the Spielberg film Lincoln was built on an adaptation of historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's book Team of Rivals:The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.
