What are you doing to celebrate Brooklyn Day?

Tomorrow is Brooklyn Day. Or, more appropriately, Brooklyn-Queens Day.

For those of you not in the know, Brooklyn Day was originally a holiday to celebrate the founding of the first Protestant Sunday School in Brooklyn. It dates back all the way to the late 1800s, when all schools would close to allow students to celebrate their Sunday schools.

Growing up as a kid, there were parades in every parish with scouts, drum and bugle corps, dancers, etc. Now, I think most kids just stay home and play while their parents wonder why the teachers are doing professional development in June.

So, how are you celebrating the holiday?

When I was in school, it was just another day off for us. I don't remember having the origin of the holiday ever explained to me.

When I was in high school, I relished the day off while those who made the commute to other schools like Stuy or Bronx Science still had to report to class. I believe my senior prom was on the evening of Brooklyn-Queens Day.

Now it's just another day. Maybe the subways will be a little emptier tomorrow morning.

I remember getting this day off from school when I was a kid but we were never told why. But to a kid, any day off is a good day. In any event, I don't think many people celebrate it, I won't be celebrating it in any special way and I never have. But thanks for giving a little history on it. I learned something today.

I remember this holiday well. It was always known to us in the Central Brooklyn community what this day was about: the celebration of Christian education in Sunday Schools. The churches in Bed-Stuy would have parades along Stuyvesant Avenue where their Boy & Girl Scouts would march, along with any drum corp. And it was Brooklyn-Queens Day.
